Handwritten corrspondence has been dealt a nearly fatal blow by email. For many generations the American mailbox was the small town symbol of reliable and faithful service -

"Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these courageous couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds" applied almost as much to the mailbox as it applied to mail carriers.

It is a little known fact that the Hope Diamond was sent by mail from New York City to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. Technological achievement aside, it is sad to see this once proud symbol of American strength and reliability relegated to being the depository of monthly bills.

I am TOTALLY resisting posting owner statements online. I'll make direct deposits for funds; however, I'll e-mail statement JUST SO I can write an e-mail with news and explain items on their cash flow report....5 years ago, I mailed half of my month statements with time-consuming hand written notes....44-cent stamps have taken their toll and I am encouraging e-mail statements!!!

Karen - Sad but true! I must admit, I email for convenience and rarely send a letter or even a card any more unless I feel my clients would appreciate it. My newsletter is always sent via email. It saves trees! :-)

Great photos, Karen! It still is a bargain if you think about it that a first class mailing can be delivered anywhere in the country in just a few days for under 50 cents. I would guess that letters still hand written aren't impulsive, spur of the moment reactions to someone else's correspondence and that they are more secure in nature. Just a thought.

Call me old fashion I still send hand written notecards to clients, agents who have shown my properties, family and friends. I recently introduced my nephew to the workings of the post office, he wrote a letter to grandma, we walked to the post office where he mailed it and a couple days later grandma called all excited to say that she received his letter. Of course we are all centrally located in Brooklyn, New York, so you know I had to drive him over to grandma house so that he could see his letter on her grandkids story board. Emails are not the same.

Karen, Mailboxes are becoming harder to find as they are being removed in many areas. I still enjoy seeing what new stamps are out there, and still write an occasional letter here and there. Yes times keep changing, but you can't beat a handwritten letter on beautiful stationary.
