What Do You Love to Do?

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Premier

Someone asked me why I chose to be a Realtor? They were also bold enough to ask me if I ever felt bad that lots of people think Realtors aren't very nice people.

Here's what I said: "Well, I guess like other professions that have an image problem in the public eye, the bad apples create the mindset while the great ones labor in relative obscurity."

Nate GerardI went on to say that I'm a Realtor because I want to help people and I really LOVE real estate; the analysis, the negotiation, the art of marketing... but most of all I really enjoy meeting someone new, helping them set realistic goals and creating a plan to help them accomplish those goals. Maybe I even get a friend out of it but at the very least, my customers know I'm passionate about helping them and that I get the job done.

Of all places this actually struck me at the liquor store! I've always wondered why I don't feel like the owner of the local store cares about his customers. I go there enough to be considered a regular customer. Alright I know what you're thinking; I don't go there that much I've just lived in my neighborhood for over 6 years! Anyway, I realized why I feel that way. He doesn't love what he's doing. It's just a business to him. He doesn't really like wine, or fine scotch, or a good lager. It's just a living to him and I get the feeling that when I talk to him he only likes my wallet. I've heard other people in my neighborhood say they can't put their finger on why they don't feel like a valued customer there and I think I figured it out.

So what I'm asking is, "Do you LOVE what you do or is it just a way to get paid?" If you don't love it, why don't you do something else? Wouldn't you be better at something you really love? You're doing yourself and your customers a disservice.

I LOVE what I do! I hope you do too.

Hi Nate, I do love being a Realtor...most of the time.  There are those days where 24/7 can be hard...but I am learning to let the calls go to voicemail and wait to check emails...lol  It is so satisfying to hear a client say at the closing table how much they appreciated my help...that matters way more than the paycheck.

Nate, I am not sure I could answer it. Is it a way for me to survive? Absolutely. Do I like doing it. I guess so, but is it more a secondary thing when you like what you do pretty well?

Would I be doing something else, if it paid. Probably.

you are saying that you like helping people. Fine. But what would be radically different to you in that sense, if you were a doctor, a lawyer, the accountant?

Why would anyone just take real estate and say they love it because they like to help people, or like to interact with people... This is not unique

Cindy: Yes, I can't say I haven't had bad days too but glad you're with me!

Jon: I know you've been doing this a long time so I can't reallt speak to your motivation. I do have to respectfully disagree. I think Gary Vaynerchuk would disagree too. Google him. Loving what we do is at least as important as doing it well.

Cheryl: I appreciate your support! To prove our point, how would you feel about going to a surgeon who didn't like his job?
