It's Not Personal it's Business, or is IT? so we have all heard this or said this.  Let me ask you this is that a real statement? How can Business not be Personal?  I spent the first part of my life in the Restaurant Business,  the last 12 years I was an Executive Chef and business was very personal.
What is business, as a Real Estate Professional what do we DO?Homes for Sale

  • We Build Relationships
  • We handle Millions of Dollars in production helping people purchase a product that will be the biggest purchase in their LIFE! (OK this one is very personal)
  • Customer Service
  • Honesty

  • Selling a Home
  • Investing in Real Estate

Home For sale Contract

So tell me, From this list what is not Personal?  What is just Business?  Am I missing something?  Please chime in tell me your thoughts.  I ask this because I had an agent call me this week and tell me here is an offer and please remember its "NOT PERSONAL IT'S BUSINESS".  I do understand that the contract part is completely business, however that is such a small part of the business.

As I mentioned above The career I have chooses is very personal, I am not here to make a fast $$$ I am her to help my clients today, tomorrow, and the rest of my life.  Real Estate is Very Personal to me

So help me, tell me your thoughts on

What Our Clients Have to Say About Us:

Neal Hayden

I have known Ken for several years and he is an outstanding professional
real estate agent. I have referred clients to Ken and will continue to do

Ken is one of those industry leaders that you just don't forget. When you
hire him you actually hire his entire team, how great is that! I chose Ken
over many other realtors that I know to help my wife and I choose our first
investment property. He not only excelled in finding properties that met our
criteria, but also found some creative "outside the box" ideas that opened
our eyes to other options. He and his team were available to us and
patiently answered the thousand questions we had. And his hearty laugh is
testament to how much fun he makes the experience. In the process Ken has
become someone I respect and count as a dear friend. I whole-heartedly
recommend Ken for any of your real estate investment needs.
Top qualities: Personable, Expert, and Creative

I met Ken through a networking group and also was able to work directly
with him during my short stint as a Realtor. From the perspective of another
Realtor, I am entirely impressed with the time and effort Ken put into each
sale. Whether helping a buyer find the right property or guiding a seller
through the process, Ken is a true professional. Besides his dedication,
what sets Ken apart from others is his vast experience with investors and
investment properties. By knowing what to look for, he can determine what is
a good investment and which ones are not. In this market especially I would
trust Ken to help me determine the best value and walk me through the

I worked with Ken on a real estate development project when he was with a
previous company. Ken is very organized, a great negotiator and salesman.
Ken also brings a very positive attitude to everything he is involved in.
Ken is a delight to work with.

Thank you for everything you did for us. You helped us find the perfect

Our home buying experience was CRRRRAZY ! After waiting five months on a
short sale, we lost it two days before closing, lost a foreclosure, lost a
for sale by owner-the dude was too drunk to sign paperwork!! lost a home to
a conventional loan- even though our offer was by far the highest. ..Ummm
there was more...none of which was our fault. Nonetheless we were hit with
many challenges.

You represented us as a good agent should. Above all you listened to our
wants, needs and budget, you were always personable and professional. Thank
you so much for always being available. Sometimes we called 5 or 7x in a
day (not to mention the emails) and you were prompt with a response. When
we found a house we wanted to look at, we meant right now not 30 min from
now. You did good! We have to give you credit for patience. We had high
demands and your attention to detail exceeded our expectations. We would
highly recommend you to anyone looking for any buying or selling a home.

I want to sincerely thank you for ALL that you are doing for me in regards
to my parent's house. I really do appreciate your help! You were an answer
to prayer at a very "low" time in my life. And I am "singing your praises"
to everyone I meet. I think I may have a neighbor that will want to talk to
you after the Holidays - he is thinking about putting his house up for sale.

I am SO grateful to you for the things you are doing on Craigslist. I check
it every once in a while & see how you keep it updated at all times. I viewed
the one on Sunday, I believe it was, that had the heading LOCATION,
LOCATION, LOCATION - how clever!

I have shown the Visual Tour to some people and friends to show them how
"great" you are.

Fine line between the two.....Making something emotional or maintaining an objective stance determines whether it is personal or business......Curious thing...the shift between the two can happen very quickly if you are not grounded....good post and thank you.....Ken...

Great play on words, Ken.  We all know that when an agent submits an offer and says it's, "not's business" that they're appologizing to some extend for the "crappy" offer (justified or not).  Our "personal"ities and uniqueness is what attracts the clientele we work with.  There's definitely a "personal" aspect to what we do.  Balancing it with the "business" side is what creates or hinders our success.

The purchase and sale of a home is personal and business, it is very hard to eliminate one side completely.

Ken, interesting post.  I have heard that phrase often.  Just had an interesting conflict with another agent, who insulted my intelligence because I wouldn't give in to his client's ridiculous wishes, or maybe they were really his wishes.  In any event, the insults were personal!  Great post,

Ken, I believe to be a Great sales person you have have to be personal with business boundries.  We get in trouble by violating Boundies between what is right and wrong.

Ken - I agree... Real estate is personal. We are invited into the homes of these people behind the closed doors privy to info even their families may not know. They make it personal when they choose us to represent them at difficult times in their lives. But it doesn't mean we can not handle it with professionalism!! Great blog Ken!

Spending day after day with someone for months, you sometimes learn stuff their best friends don't know about them. I've become great friends with many of my clients and look forward to spending game nights out or kid get togethers with them. This business is very personal, you get to know exactly what they like and don't like and hopefully in the end you still like each other.

Very thought provoking post.  I agree with Todd above.  Even when it comes to the business of writing up offers, it becomes very personal.

Clients all have different personal styles and different ways of negotiating.  If we don't embrace the personal part of the equation we might as well not be in this business.
