Fine line between the two.....Making something emotional or maintaining an objective stance determines whether it is personal or business......Curious thing...the shift between the two can happen very quickly if you are not grounded....good post and thank you.....Ken...

Great play on words, Ken.  We all know that when an agent submits an offer and says it's, "not personal...it's business" that they're appologizing to some extend for the "crappy" offer (justified or not).  Our "personal"ities and uniqueness is what attracts the clientele we work with.  There's definitely a "personal" aspect to what we do.  Balancing it with the "business" side is what creates or hinders our success.

The purchase and sale of a home is personal and business, it is very hard to eliminate one side completely.

Gentleman, thank you for the great words!! I appreciate that.. I think for the most part as a RE we blend the 2 and need to manage that as well.

Ken, interesting post.  I have heard that phrase often.  Just had an interesting conflict with another agent, who insulted my intelligence because I wouldn't give in to his client's ridiculous wishes, or maybe they were really his wishes.  In any event, the insults were personal!  Great post,

Ken, I believe to be a Great sales person you have have to be personal with business boundries.  We get in trouble by violating Boundies between what is right and wrong.

Ken - I agree... Real estate is personal. We are invited into the homes of these people behind the closed doors privy to info even their families may not know. They make it personal when they choose us to represent them at difficult times in their lives. But it doesn't mean we can not handle it with professionalism!! Great blog Ken!

Spending day after day with someone for months, you sometimes learn stuff their best friends don't know about them. I've become great friends with many of my clients and look forward to spending game nights out or kid get togethers with them. This business is very personal, you get to know exactly what they like and don't like and hopefully in the end you still like each other.

Very thought provoking post.  I agree with Todd above.  Even when it comes to the business of writing up offers, it becomes very personal.

Clients all have different personal styles and different ways of negotiating.  If we don't embrace the personal part of the equation we might as well not be in this business.
