18 Comments on East Race Street in Searcy Arkansas revisited.....almost.....
That's a beautiful old home, Barbara. I'm glad to see it was saved and thanks for posting about it.
Good morning Barbara. What a nice place. I'm glad it was spared the wrecking ball. Does Searcy have a preservation group?
Barbara, such a great looking home and saved to go on and create new stories for the owners
Wow, that's a beauty. Don't recognize it though. It looks like brick or is it some material that looks like brick? Anyway considering it has been moved, the place and location looks great.
Toni, thank you for your nice comment.
Charles, I don't think we have one of those.
Ed, it has been moved for probably almost 40 years or so and there has to be new memories.
Don, we pay so little attention to our surroundings when young.....or old! The blog has made us all sit up and think.
I do not remember this house....do I? Can we know who lived in it before Safeway? and what the address was? (I might look up the owners in my trusty '57 phonebook)....I love the contemporary look....might we know where it is, too?
Now to answer Charles Edwards: NO, Searcy does not have a preservation group, they certainly need (needed) one over the past years. There are a few people who were and are still concerned over historical Searcy, and preserving buildings and homes....but not enough to stop the movers and shakers of Searcy from bulldozing anything and everything that comes in front of their greedy path.
Searcy probably has one of the worst historic-preservation ethics of any town I've ever lived in, sadly. Barbara, thanks for posting this - I just wrote an article about the original appearance of Race Street and I was curious as to what some of those old houses along there looked like.
Anita, you may need to move back to Searcy and start a preservation group. How do they work anyhow?
Luke, your article inspired me to put up this blog. It has big trees in the yard probably similar to the trees that would have been around the houses on Race St.
Barbara,
You sure pack a whole lot of local color into your blog posts.
Barbara - Is that Dr. Bruce and Jean Robbins old house that the Boyettes moved?
Steven, it seems as if I do.
Laura, yes it is. Did you recognize it?
This doesn't happen to be Dr. Hawkins house, does it? The facade doesn't look right but I sort of remember his house being in that area.
So glad to see one that was saved! I do not remember "before Safeway". I do remember cruising Race St when there was nothing past the overpass other than the skating rink.
Harold Gene, I don't know if it was ever Hawkins house. Maybe someone else will.
Dana, I barely remember before Safeway if at all. In fact, how long has that overpass been there?
What a lovely home. I'm curious as to where it is currently located? As for a preservation group in Searcy...When I was complaining about the house that was recently demolished on West Arch my daughter said "Mom, start a group to save houses!" Well, I'm not knowledgeable enough to know how to go about such a thing, but if such a group ever does start up in Searcy I'd LOVE to a part of it!
Angela, call me for an update on this home. I nominate you as president of the new club for saving homes!! We'll make Anita vp! I'll do your promoting on this blog!!
Hi Barbara ~ Catching up on your blog tonight. Good to know this handsome house was saved - it is a real looker.
Liz
Liz, it is nice and right now we have another one being saved. I've got to put it on a blog.
