After pressure from the Organization of Central East Austin Neighborhoods (OCEAN) - the City has started to sever ties with the revitalization authority which was working to redevelop areas on E11th and E12th Streets.
The Austin Revitalization Authority ARA has some successes in it's 11 year relationship - renovating two historic structures, public works projects and building office and retail buildings - though critics cite the lack of ground moving activty in 6 years as a sign of mis-management.
One of my favorite sites on my pre-dawn runs training for the 2010 Austin Marathon was running towards downtown Austin from the East and seeing the skyline framed by the arches that led out of the revitalization district. I appeared on a radio show in one of the new office buildings. I've eaten East Side Pies despite despising pizza.
I hope that the area continues to fluorish with or without the ARA.
