If you are looking for something fun and enjoyable to do this fall, Oyster Bay, NY has a variety of things to do.  You do not have to travel far from home.   As a service to Oyster Bay-East Norwich community and its neighboring villages - Brookville, Muttontown, Oyster Bay Cove, Bayville, Locust Valley, Syosset, Laurel Hollow, Centre Island and Mill Neck, here is a list of fall events for you to enjoy as residents of these towns.

 Thursday, October 7th-  OYSTER BAY MAIN STREET ASSOCIATION STOREFRONT OFFICE OPEN HOUSE.  All are welcome for the official opening of MSA's new storefront office.  Refreshments served.  7 Audrey Avenue (a few doors down from Coin Galleries), 6 P.M. to 9 P.M. 

Thursday, October 7th-  GRAND OPENING: THINK LONG ISLAND FIRST, a new retailer dedicated to selling goods made on Long Island, featuring Cutchogue artist / wood turner, Harry Wicks,  presenting his works, including bowls, plates, and vases.  Other products to be carried by TLIF include pottery, photography, stationery, cosmetics, jewelry, knits, honey, jams, and jellies.  TLIF will be located within Buckingham Variety Store in Oyster Bay, during this evening's Art Walk hours.  For more information, visit www.thinklongislandfirst.com.

Thursday, October 7th-  ART WALK / "FIRST THURSDAYS NIGHT ON THE TOWN"- art, food, wine, and music.  The walk features an international spectrum of contemporary artists.  Other businesses and sites in town will be displaying artwork.  Local restaurants will be exhibiting art and are offering a percentage off on meals, wine tastings, and more.  Live music entertainment is scheduled.  Cafes and restaurants will remain open late for dessert and coffee.  The evening will begin with Chase Edwards Gallery (15 East Main Street; 802-0655; http://www.chaseedwardsgallery.com/), Atelier Gallery (9 East Main Street; 205-0907; http://www.jerelynhanrahan.com/), and Art(that matters) (55 West Main Street; 917-769-9921; http://www.artthatmatters.com/) having exhibitions featuring contemporary art from around the world, 7 P.M. to 9 P.M.  The Teaching Studios of Oyster Bay will be open with an evening workshop and a tour of their facilities (115 Audrey Avenue; 971-597-2404; http://www.teachingstudios.com/).  The Theodore Roosevelt Association gallery (20 Audrey Avenue; 921- 6319; www.curatorialservices.com) will also be open.

Monday, October 11th-  COLUMBUS DAY.  Per History.com: "Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492.  It was unofficially celebrated in a number of cities and states as early as the 18th century but did not become a federal holiday until...1937. For many, the holiday is a way of both honoring Columbus' achievements and celebrating Italian-American heritage."

 

Tuesday, October 12th-  WATERSHED ACTION PLAN PUBLIC MEETING (via Friends of the Bay).  The plan will include goals and action items that could be adopted by governmental agencies and private groups to protect and improve the health of the Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor watershed and estuary.  ALL ARE WELCOME AND URGED TO ATTEND.   Oyster Bay High School Performing Arts Center/Auditorium, 7 P.M.  For more information, call 922-6666.

Saturday, October 23rd-  FREE HALLOWEEN HAUNTED MANOR.  Guided outdoor tours will be provided by local Long Island Hellcats girls softball players.  Donations to the Hellcats organization are welcome.  Home of the Galganos- 261 Glen Cove-Oyster Bay Road, Oyster Bay, NY at 7:30 P.M. to 10 P.M.  Visitors should park on Canon Lane or on Renville Court and walk to the driveway entrance.  All visitors under age 10 must be accompanied by an adult.  For more information, call 297-0478.  This event is weather permitting.

Saturday, October 23rd-  EAST NORWICH FALL PLANTING AND CLEAN-UP (via Committee for the Beautification of East Norwich and the East Norwich Rotary).  Meet at the corner of Route 106 and Northern Blvd. in East Norwich, NY (by the "welcome to EN" sign / water basin), 10 A.M. 

Sunday, October 24th-  SAVE THE CHRISTEEN BENEFIT PARTY / FUNDRAISER, including refreshments and auction.  $30/person, with donations also welcome.  The Christeen, a 40 foot wooden oyster sloop, was originally built in 1883 and completely restored in the 1990s.  Serving the WaterFront Center since 2002 as a floating classroom, she has taken about 17,000 people out on the Bay on approximately 1,200 excursions.  Repairs are in need at this point, with the goal of having her back out and resuming WaterFront Center programs next April.  Beaver Dam Winter Sports Club, 99 Kaintuck Lane, Locust Valley, 5 P.M. to 8 P.M.  For more information, call 922-7245, write info@thewfc.org, or visit www.thewaterfrontcenter.org.

Sunday, November 7th-  HOMEOWNERS CLEANUP (via Town of Oyster Bay).  Dispose of non-hazardous debris, including large metal items, yard waste, and clean broken concrete- all of which can be recycled.  Campers, boats, and trailers may also be turned over to the Town with proper title documents (all campers and boats must be drained of all oil, gas, and other fluids, and all batteries removed).  TOB Solid Waste Disposal Complex, Bethpage-Sweet Hollow Road, 8:30 A.M. to 4 P.M.  For more information, call 677-5943.

Sunday, November 14th-  STOP AND ELECTRONIC WASTE COLLECTION DAY (via Town of Oyster Bay).  ACCEPTABLE STOP Waste: pesticides, brake/transmission fluid, waste motor oil, drain/oven cleaners, paints, photo chemicals, tires, automobile batteries, grill propane tanks, consumer batteries, compact fluorescent bulbs (NOT radioactive materials, explosives/fireworks, unlabeled materials, medical waste).  ACCEPTABLE Electronic Waste: computers, monitors, laptops, printers, keyboards, mouses, cables, copiers, fax machines, cell phones, televisions (NOT microwaves, stereos, appliances, VCRs).  **Used Motor Oil can ALWAYS be returned to all service stations that perform oil changes (up to 5 gallons per person per day), as well as to the Town's Old Bethpage Solid Waste Disposal Complex, Bethpage-Sweet Hollow Road (open 7 A.M. to 3 P.M., 7 days per week) and to the Town's new waste oil tanks located at the TR Park boat basin / marina.  TOB Dept. of Public Works, 150 Miller Place, Syosset, 9 A.M. to 4 P.M.  For more information, call 677-5943.
