Kansas City has more fountains than any other city in the world with the exception of Rome. One of our most famous and well-loved fountains is the JC Nichols Fountain on the eastern edge of the Country Club Plaza. You may recognize this fountain from tourist brochures as the one with the four horses.
Look familiar? Yes, it's pink today in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
You can click for FREE and sponsors will donate to pay for mammograms.
Back to the JC Nichols Fountain. Besides its' location on the south end of Mill Park just east of the Plaza, the fountain is truly a remarkable work of art.
The fountain was made in 1910 in Paris by sculpture Henri Greber. The fountain lived on an estate in New York until 1949 when a fire destroyed the estate. The Nichols family brought the figures to Kansas City. Donations by the Nichols and other Kansas Citians provided the money to restore the figures. The park service apportioned the land.
Have you ever taken a close look at the sculptures in the fountain? They are pretty impressive.
For some reason, many of the figures in the fountain are holding cat tails in their hands.
This guy is not carrying a cattail - he is carrying a weapon of some kind.
Check this guy out - he has a weapon also!
Now look at what he is battling.
Isn't the detail amazing?
I wonder where Henri Greber learned about alligators?
This horseman is fighting with a bear!
Can you make out the bear? The bear is on his back under the horse. Notice the detail of the pads of his feet.
Here, children ride on a giant fish. Some people say it is a dophin. Maybe so.
Here's a wider view of the Indian fightng the bear.
The white building across the street in the background is a church designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
This guy is blowing a conch shell. The muscles in the horse and men are very well defined.
The water in the center spout shoots 30 feet into the air. You can see that the wind picked up a bit this afternoon.
JC Nichols Memorial Fountain in Kansas City is a dynamic work of art. Residents and visitors to Kansas City have enjoyed it for more than 50 years now and I expect we will continue to be drawn to it.
Some more than others. ^_^
Sometimes just looking at the fountain is not enough; sometimes one feels the need to touch the flowing water.
