Kansas City has more fountains than any other city in the world with the exception of Rome. One of our most famous and well-loved fountains is the JC Nichols Fountain on the eastern edge of the Country Club Plaza. You may recognize this fountain from tourist brochures as the one with the four horses.

Back to the JC Nichols Fountain. Besides its' location on the south end of Mill Park just east of the Plaza, the fountain is truly a remarkable work of art.

The fountain was made in 1910 in Paris by sculpture Henri Greber. The fountain lived on an estate in New York until 1949 when a fire destroyed the estate. The Nichols family brought the figures to Kansas City. Donations by the Nichols and other Kansas Citians provided the money to restore the figures. The park service apportioned the land.

Have you ever taken a close look at the sculptures in the fountain? They are pretty impressive.

For some reason, many of the figures in the fountain are holding cat tails in their hands.

JC Nichols Memorial Fountain in Kansas City is a dynamic work of art. Residents and visitors to Kansas City have enjoyed it for more than 50 years now and I expect we will continue to be drawn to it.

Some more than others. ^_^

Sometimes just looking at the fountain is not enough; sometimes one feels the need to touch the flowing water.

Or at least dip your feet in!

You Kansas Citians (I like saying that) are fortunate to have lots of nice fountains. I bet they are pretty in snow and ice, too.
