With three miles of nature trails and walkways around our waterfront community, we wondered if our residents would embrace their own Blue Bird Trail? We quickly discovered the answer.

The Founders Pointe Nature Watch Program kicked off with the Bluebird Workshop. Our efforts in purchasing the blue bird houses and materials to install them didn't go unnoticed by our residents. 17 Bluebird homes were put together and installed by our neighborhood residents along the walking path between the main entrance, around the lake, and observation pier. To complete the Bluebird Trail, an additional Bluebird home has been placed in each cul-de-sac around the neighborhood. Please note that while Bluebirds are tolerant of human interaction, there are critical times during their nesting cycle when the Bluebirds must not be disturbed.

News spread quickly throughout the community and it didn't take long to get a featured article in the Daily Press newspaper about the Blue Bird Trail effort.

A volunteer group within the neighborhood of Founders Pointe has been established to maintain the Bluebird homes, as well as monitor and collect data on each Bluebird nest. Only these volunteers, which have been educated on how to properly maintain and monitor the Bluebird popluation, should handle the nests. Our residents have a vested interest in nurturing these new homes for some of Virginia's most popular birds. Now, there's even an effort to build purple martin bird homes along the trail!
