Mary Chappell

Mary Chappell, a textiles artist from Virginia, moved to West Virginia in 1980 to open a gallery at the Greenbrier's Art Colony.  She now resides in Lewisburg, WV and has been at the Greenbrier for 30 years.

"My mission has always been to link talented artists with an educated and admiring public.  I have been involved with the retail sale of handcrafted goods since 1976, when a friend and I opened a weaving supply shop and gallery in Harrisonburg, VA.  I was a producing artist at the time, and, in 1979, I was given the opportunity to open a weaving studio at The Greenbrier’s Artist Colony."

Studio 40, West Virginia’s premier wearable art gallery, opened April 1, 1980.  Mary said that customer demand was so great that she soon began adding other artists’ work.

By 1989, Studio 40 was representing around 50 American artists, and now that number exceeds 110.  In Mary's gallery, she now carries a sophisticated and artful mix of clothing, jewelry, handbags and home accessories, all handcrafted by some of the best and most creative artists in the country.   "We are also proud to represent the work of many emerging artists….a practice that keeps the inventory fresh, fun and full of youthful creative energy," says Mary.

Studio 40 has been honored three times as a “Top 100 American Craft Retailer” by Niche Magazine, a publication for American craft artists and galleries.

Rebecca, Love to hear success stories involving artists and artisans.  As a weaver myself, I know how good it is to have a place to sell one's creations.  Great  localism post.
