Henderson County NC Extension Office

Happy GardeningDoes your County have an Extension Office? Chances are that is does. In 1914 the government passed what is called the Smith Lever Act. This Act mandated that the Federal Government provide the funding through the US Department of Agriculture so that each state could establish an Agricultural Extension Office. These offices are strictly educational, and have become the 'go to' place for anyone seeking information on anything agricultural.

Personally, I have had so much great help from these offices, all across the country. When I lived in Iowa, the Johnson  County Extension Office gave me the help I needed to safely can when I had a huge garden and was first trying to learn the process without killing myself. There they also assisted me in testing my soil and getting it ready for a productive garden.

When I lived in New Mexico, it was a huge challenge to garden and the office there assisted me in soil amendment and in choosing plants that would actually grow in a dry and sunny climate. Here in Henderson County, the Extension Office assisted me in finding out what was wrong with my cherry trees this spring, and in getting the least toxic way to correct the problem. Where ever I go, they are there and ready to help me.

These County Extension Offices are manned by real professionals, and there are so many ways that they can help you in anything related to agriculture, no matter how big or small. They are the first place I look for when I move to a new area, because I know that I will be setting up a garden and they will know exactly what I need to do for the particular area to get the space ready and just right for what I want to do.

There is so much that the Extension Office can do to assist you. Not only do they help with plants, but also raising animals as well. They are the ones that have created the 4H program and fairs, and so much more. If you are interested in The Henderson County Extension Office, check out their website or give them a call at (828)697-4891. You can visit them at their office, located in Jackson Park, right across from the baseball field.
