Streotyped

By
Real Estate Agent with Client First, Realtors - Canton, MI

I have been watching the new homicide show, Detroit 1-8-7 this Fall. I have been watching the show more because it is filmed in and around Detroit. The jury is still out for me whether I will keep the show on my Tivo list, but for now I am enjoying seeing Detroit weekly on the little screen.

During this past weeks episode a real estate agent was featured as one of the characters. The show quickly developed the agent as unethical, hiring gang members to scare homeowners to drive down values of homes so that a greedy investor could come in an buy up the homes cheaply.

Now I know that this is TV and not reality, but I would love to see one TV show that depicts who real estate professionals actually are and what they do. Whether it is "reality" shows that depict real estate agents that casually show three homes and then write an offer that is quickly accepted. Show up to a home that has been on market for years, paint the kitchen cabinents and then hold an open house where fifty people show up there does not seem to be any reality on TV.

Likewise, when agents are portrayed as greedy, unethical, and unscrupulous all agents are stereotyped. In my experience, most Realtors (r)  are very hardworking, honest, knowledgeable and steadfast to their code of ethics.   However, these qualities do not make for good TV, but they do make for a good agent.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

Sounds like unbelievable science fiction.  Who needs to hire anyone to drive prices down? With a story line like that, how can the series even survive?
