Holiday time is fast approaching and Sellers will be wanting to pull out their favorite holiday decorations to display. This is a great time to to be reminded that how we LIVE in a home is not how we live in it when we are trying to SELL a home. I know this is sometimes hard to do (especially in a home where there are small children) . I once showed a home that had so much christmas stuff that you couldn't even see the room, let alone walk around..the Seller even had a different holiday teddy bear on each step going to the second level. The last thing you want is to have the rooms appear smaller than they are and have the Buyers looking at your things..and not the house.

This is not the time to be displaying the villages, train sets and all the other large displays that will distract the Buyer from looking at the house. No need to place something on every table, shelve or as in the above case steps. As to the outside, see picture..this is not how your home should look when it is on the market unless its in one of those neighborhoods that is known for this and people flock to it each year. Keep in mind that families with small children will be looking at your home, so keep any thing that you cherish and would prefer not broken displayed higher..or better yet boxed safetly away.As with anytime during the year, be careful when burning those candles. Scents that might smell good to you can easily turn others off. On that note, I have yet to meet the person that didn't like the scent of fresh baked cookies..hint hint.

Go ahead, display some well placed items but pare it down. This is a great time to consult with your agent for an honest opinion when you are getting ready to decorate. Working together will go a long in getting your home sold faster.

I agree also!  A few decorations may enhance the home.  Too many hurt!  I also like the comment about the candles.  I have allergies and start sneezing over candles, plugins, etc., but have never started sneezing from smelling cookies!  Great reminder.

Kathy, Thanks, its always interesting when there are lots of decorations..similar to lots of photographs and collections how many buyers will walk around looking at them instead of the house. When your home is on the market is a time to refrain from decorating the way the you normally would.

Stephanie, I like that.."A few decorations may enhance the home..too many hurt" Well said. Candles are like perfume. Not everyone likes the same scent and as you mentioned, lots of people have allergies. Cookies, much better. :)
