I get a few calls a week, maybe even a call a day, from someone who is promising to improve my rankings in the search engines. Fact is, I look pretty good in that regard so those are brief conversations.

True to form, these same companies also solicit business by Email. I am used to that. But I had never thought about there being companies that make a living by doing social media for other businesses. I guess it makes sense, and is an extension of advertising agencies if you think about it. However I cannot imagine turning the reigns of my Active Rain account or Facebook, etc over to someone else. I guess, at least in regard to blogging, I really question if doing so would not be a breach of trust with one's readers.  If you are wondering what I am talking about, here is a copy of the Email I received today.

To whom it may concern;

Please consider outsourcing your Social Media work to our company, as our price structure is well below what you would pay an "in-house" part time Social Media Manager.

In fact, most full time Social Media experts cannot match our depth, experience and ability to grab the attention of a broad audience, and turn new fans into loyal customers. Our prices range from $8.33 per hour to $18.75 per hour. Expect rapid quality results from your direct marketing at a fraction of the cost by hiring "in-house".

I would like to show you how the right social media marketing plan can dramatically increase your business. We can help to effectively spread the word of your company and/or product(s).

Please email me or call us at the number below, it certainly can't hurt researching your options. I look forward to emailing you our price list and package plans, including a current client list.

Sincerely,XXXXXXXX

Thanks for stopping by,

Steven L. Smith

Sounds crazy!  I can't imagine letting someone else take over a profile that portrays so much about who I am as a person.  My social networking allows my readers to get to know me... Not my business.

I agree sounds too much like a bait and switch.I try to control as much about me as possible. Thanks for the post.

Steven, I have heard of people hiring it out. I even considered it 2 years ago when I first started with Social Media. In hindsight, I can see how stupid that would have been. Glad I decided not to.

This is ridiculous! I want personal content from the people I subscribe to...not a hired hand!

AND...."Our prices range from $8.33 per hour to $18.75 per hour." ARE THEY CRAZY!

Steve, 8.33 an hour?  Does that mean the kid working at the golden arches is going to do it in his spare time when he isn't flipping burgers?
