128 Comments on A letter to my family and friends about real estate referrals
Worthy of a re-blog, and a reminder letter to our databases. Excellent post... and I loved the classy way you handled the conversation :)
Ditto.
It would help people to understand that we'd only refer to someone who can get the job done well, for obvious reasons.
To add to Stan Albert's comment (106), my all time favorite: A call from someone who talked to me about helping her buy a home and didn't hear from her for 10 months after that until one day the phone rang and she said, "I bought a home through someone else. Now I want to refinance. Can I tell you the loan program so you can tell me if the loan is a good one."
It is amazing to me that, as professionals, most of us don't know or understand the value we give to the clients we serve! We are the ones that fail to express to friends, family and even acquaintances that our espertise is most valuable to them. It is imperative that we let them know that, yes we make a living by our represtatation, it is them that benefit most financial by allowing us to do what we do best. That is listing, selling and finding a Realtor in another community that works professionally in the manner we do! We can't get upset with others for our failure to let them know what we do and how we work!
This post just put me over 60,000 points on Activerain, thank you!
Marian,
Don't we give good service by finding a good agent outside of our area of specialization? We in the business deserve a referral fee when referring to another agent, don't we? As a client moving to that area I would be glad to receive a referral from a trustworthy source. As the agent recipient of that good referral I would be more than glad to pay a referral fee for a client that I received by simply being knowledgeable of the area where I work.
You certainly handled the situation professionally. You are the kind of Realtor I love doing business with!!
I wish I'd understood this process a few months back before listing my father-in-law's condo in FL
Dear Marian,
Good idea. That reminds me: Anyone know any good real estate professionals in Southern France? Check referrals posted for more info.
Great Post. I really like how you stated what we really need and want to say.
Thank you very much.

You nailed this. Could not have been said better than the way you did.
Marian, well written and explains how referrals work. I have re-blogged and thankyou.

Very well written Marian!
We need to educate our prospective clients as well. Alot of them don't understand how a referral works.

Hope you're not tired of hearing this yet, Marian, but Great Post! :) I also like the comment you made about what you would say if the agent they chose wasn't great. Very nicely said. Hope this kicks your referrals into high gear!
Well done and quite classy.
I found that my niece was moving, got aggressive and emailed her. I explained that I would help find and screen and agent for her. I was able to find an excellent agent. I also disclosed that I would be receiving a referral fee. It was a win-win situation as she had 2 bum real estate agents before.
Thank you for bringing up a source of revenue we often overlook, and for the composed letter.
Agents hear so much in the media about what is going on in other markets. Referrals are a great way for an agent to stay in touch with a live person who can give first hand information about diverse markets. Also, it is a great way to pick up real estate tips being used by other agents and to form anetwork.

Thanks for sharing your letter. It is a great way of gathering more business. Most people don't understand the referral process and this is a great way to start that conversation with friends and family.
May I ask who writes up the referral agreement so that the person gets paid for referring the property?
Thanks,
Barbara
