A majority of my files print with no problems.  But it always seems when I'm running late for a closing, and need the package printed fast, I get that one .PDF file that prints a page a minute or so.  I use Windows XP Professional on my main computer, and Windows Media edition on my laptop.  It doesn't matter which computer I use, or which printer I print to, I have troubles with slow printing.  I have three laser printers, I print the borrowers package to two printers through a network - an HP Laser 1320 (should print about 20 pages per minute) that is connected to the network wirelessly, and the main package to an HP 4250 that is hardwired into the network, which normally prints 55ppm.  When having troubles, I switch and print to my SHARP AL-1655CS which is a printer/copier/scanner (and I think fax but I do not use that function) that is connected to the main computer only by USB.  It still prints slow, but faster than through the network.  One title company told me, a lot of notary signing agents had troubles with their docs, and heard of a solution, but then could not locate the information to send to me. I've had 2 computer tech look at my system and can't find anything wrong with it, or any settings.  Any help would be appreciated!

I have the same problem sometimes.  I also have three printers set up to a network.  When I am running late, I use one for the legal paper (my HP LaserJet 3050) and another for letter sized my (HP 1020).  The 1020 runs ALOT faster than the newer 3050.  I always use a HP, I also have a deskjet (inkjet) all in one that I use for faxes and color copies.

I'd love to hear of way to make that 3050 faster.  It has a second delay between pages!  I had my tech guy here this morning and he could not figure it out. It prints fine with word docs. just not the PDF's.

As I said, one title company said their was a fix, but then could never locate the actual information, I am hoping this post will find someone that had the same problem and offers the elusive fix!  Keep watching!

The only fix any company have to remedy this problem is to send the docs in pdf "text format".  Most common problem associated with slow printing (scanned image file) is the lack of resources (processing power & memory) between your computer and the printer. However, I find it unusual for the HP4250 to be slow printing anything as I have a HP4100 & HP4200. I'd suggest the following if you haven't done so:

- Install/update to the latest PDF version 8.1. I don't want to go into detail, but V8.1 is over all much better.

- Upgrade printer memory to 128MB or more. Nothing it can't handle with that amount of memory.

- Adjust print resolution & density to the lowest setting possible (600dpi, FastRes, density=3/med, etc). Resolution can be set from "printer properties" in control panel and density must be set on the printer itself.

- Make sure computer has enough memory (at least 2GB) because printing/decompressing a 3MB pdf (image) file could take as much as 700MB of PC/printer (virtual "spooling" memory). I suspect this to be the most probable cause of slow printing.

- Try printing 10-20 pages at a time if you experience this problem again.

Good luck

Not sure what your printing volume is, but speaking from experience I'd suggest upgrading your printer to one that has at least 50,000 pages monthly duty cycle, faster print speed, and higher yield (>7000 pages) toner cartridge. The printer consumable is probably your biggest expense base on what you currently have.

Thanks Andy!  The 4250 has 100,000 or 200,00 (I forget) ppm duty cycle per month, so that shouldn't be an issue, but it does only have 68MB RAM.  On RAM, the 1320 (which btw has 10,000 ppm duty cycle) I have 128MB RAM.  Based on your suggestion, I shouldn't have troubles, but I do. Thank you for your ideas & suggestions!  I will try printing in text as you mention, but can you tell me where the setting is for that?  BTW, also, couple other things....when having troubles, I do only print 20 pages at a time, and that helps, but I still have troubles.  And  I just upgraded to Adobe reader 8, and havn't had troubles YET, so maybe you are correct on that as well, maybe that will solve some issues.  Oh well, as I said, thank you very much for your suggestions, maybe each little thing will help.  Have a great day!

Ron,

I have found a very simple fix in some of these situations. I don't necessarily understand it but it works in some instance.

Save the file to your desktop, then open it and print.

Thank you very much Linda, I always save then open/print.  I know there has to be a fix, as I said, a title company told me there is a specific fix, a setting in the print menu, but I cannot find anything that stands out and would seem to fix the problem.  I use the band-aid solution that Andy mentioned, 10-20 pgs/print, but that is strictly a band-aid, not a fix.  BTW, Andy, SO FAR, v8 has worked, but I've only printed a few packages since downloading v8, and do not remember specific packages to go back and experiment on previous ones.  So maybe Adobe did fix it, I can only HOPE!!!   Thanks again though Linda, hopefully SOMEONE knows the answer!!  Have a great weekend!

Take note of the size of the file they send you. Many times it has a lot to do with the way the docs are scanned in, as well.

I have been told that it makes a difference whether you have it on Windows print or Fast Print. A company showed me that one time but I don't know if it was Windows Print or if that is my default setting. I think that was on an issue of slow printing.

Size hasn't mattered, BUT I'll have to look at the windows/fast print.  I remember seeing that, and don't remember if I tried changing that, just maybe, that just COULD be it????  I HOPE!!  Thanks again!

I refurbish office equipments (computer/printer) as a hobby on the side (17yrs in hi-tech). I have not had any printing problem in the past 3 years. I offer solution not band-aid fix to tech problem that NSA experience.  Many of my clients have consulted me on this exact issue with a "why". This is an area where I have an edge over my competitions because my clients don't have to do things differently or spend time finding solution just so an NSA can print their docs.

There exist no specific fix from any companies to remedy the slow printing problem. The main cause is due to lack of computer/printer resource and technical knowledge on the NSA end. Unlike text, a pdf scanned image file require lots of computer processor/memory to render the graphic into data before sending it to the printer (sufficient memory is needed here to handle the load from the PC). Upgrading to Adobe v8 solve 50% of the problem as far as software to hardware integration.

Windows print/fast print is another method available when printing proprietary pcl encrypted file/flatform (ie. Elynx, EDS, DocsMagic, etc.).
