CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME. LET'S DO WHAT WE CAN, WHEN WE CAN, WHERE WE CAN

By
Real Estate Agent with BlueCoast Realty Corporation

I was raised, and raised my children, with the credo "Charity begins at home."  For my family, HOME is not just the 4 walls with an address, where we sleep -- It's our Homeentire community.  Even if they live 20 miles from our house, if they are in our vicinity, they are our neighbors and a part of our "home".  I don't have to know your name, I just have to know that you live in my community; that alone makes you a part of my definition of "home".

Like many communities today, my community of New Hanover County, NC has been hit by the poor economy.  We certainly haven't been hit as hard as some, but we've felt the effects.  More are in need, and fewer are helping.  Many people think they need to do something big to help, and if they aren't in a postion to do that, they do nothing.  But it's all the little things we do that add up.  The little things DO make a difference.

To this end, I am challenging my AR friends to find a way to contribute to their "home" in a way that is meaningful to them.  This could be:canned food

  • Volunteering at the animal shelter or donating food, blankets or toys for the residents
  • Donating canned goods to a local food bank -- how about at your next Broker Open you ask agents to bring a non-perishable food item?
  • Reading to residents of a nursing home (take along some hard candy)
  • Donate blood or host a blood drive through your local REALTOR® Association
  • Donating clothing or toiletries to a homeless shelter
  • Rake up the leaves in your elderly neighbors yard
  • Donate a few school supplies to the school closest to you -- they can always use them!
  • Help clean up a local park or beachBeach clean-up
  • Have your office host a food drive -- the need is great just about everywhere, and your local food pantry will be eternally grateful for the donations!

There are so many ways to do something for your community, you are really only limited by your imagination.  As a local real estate leader you probably already have an idea where the help is most needed in your community.

I'd love to hear about what you've done.  I think it would be great to share with one another how we are able to make a difference in our communities, so I am going to make this a Public Post.  Please leave your comments with a link to your favorite charity or even a blog you wrote about how you are making a difference in your community.  I want the word to get out -- so tell us all about it!  This is one of the charities I am donating my time and $$ to.  I am hoping that together we can encourage a Spirit of Giving in our hearts and "homes", wherever, or whatever you deem them to be.

In my opinion we should all do for others whenever we can because it's the right thing to do and giving of ourselves builds a strong community.  But if you want another reason?  Stronger communities will go a long way in helping our local real estate markets.  Now, can you think of any reason that wouldn't be a good thing?

Let's do what we can, when we can, where we can, because Charity Begins at Home!  Tag, you're it!!!

So true and such a healthy reminder to be an active participant in the communities where we each live.

This holiday season, our team will be seeking donations from clients, friends and families to donate to Toys for Tots and a local organization that donates pet food to families who have lost their jobs so they are able to keep their pets. With over popluation of shelters, this is a very needed charity in our community.

I think we all do some things.  I do many things through my church, but I also help out with my kids sports programs as a supportive parent.  I am a leader in Royal Rangers.  It may sound selfish to help out where my kids are involved, but I agree you need to do something and this way I can do something and be with my kids at the same time.

Gene ~ Nothing selfish in giving of your time and energy -- in any way!  And it's important for kids to see the grown-ups in their world doing something for others, it helps them to feel valued, safe and proud.  My kids still talk about the t-ball team I coached for them many years ago -- it was a great way to be with them and encourage volunteerism through action, not just words.

Great post! I'm fortunate to live in a community of very giving agents. Our local chapter gives a tremendous amount back to our community all year long.

I would add to this post by challenging everyone to promote this at their own local chapter and see an exponential giving boom!

I volunteer with Austin Street Shelter, a homeless shelter in downtown Dallas. The director visited my women's group one evening and we asked besides the money we raise what could we do to help. She told us that anything we have in our houses, she can use. They run job training programs, AA and NA programs, and arrange psychological evaluations. In addition to helping homeless people get their lives back together they help them furnish their first apartments, and they raise money with a thrift store. When I sell a house with leftover furnishings and household goods, I arrange for the charity to pick up everything the sellers no longer need or want.  Often that sofa that isn't going to the new house is anxiously anticipated by someone getting into a new apartment. Such a win win.

Still room on the bandwagon?  Then let me climb aboard.  I also love your post.  My office, Century 21 Foothill, has a great tradition of community support and activism.  My broker, Eric hatch, is a service paragon, and he sweeps us along in his wake.  If there's a community event in need of volunteers, you can count on Eric and Our Gang pitching in. Real estate as dharma.

Tish - you've touched on a subject that is near and dear to my heart. Although i have my own financial issues going on, I sponsor a child in World Vision, donate monthly to Los Angeles Feed-the-Children and I donate to many organizations throughout the year (Salvation Army, CA PAL, etc.) I recently allowed someone who had no place to sleep to stay in my home for a couple of weeks while he found permanent lodging. I also founded Give From the Heart USA last year and my goal is to eventually give up staging and run GFTH USA full time.

Thank you so much for posting this and for being someone who does the right thing! A true role model for people to emulate.

May God Bless you for your kindness and compassion.

Dana ~ We always let sellers know that if there is any (decent) furniture they are going to get rid of, that we will have someone pick it up and make certain it goes to a good home.  It's amazing how much a chair, lamp or table can mean to someone trying to get back on their feet!  A few kitchen items can make all the difference in the world!  Thank you so much for sharing!

Bob ~ Always room on this bandwagon!  As a matter of fact, you can move to the front of the line!  You are blessed to be among such givers; thank you.

Judy ~ I think we are sent those financial issues to make us sensitive to others -- I know what you're saying, you're in good company and I've added you to my prayer list!  How wonderful of you to open your heart and your home -- just, please be very careful.  Give From The Heart sounds like a marvelous platform and I wish you much success! Thank you and Blessings to you.

George ~ Thank you so much for sharing that information.  It's so important to look around and listen with our hearts right now -- no judgements, just a bit of compassion and understanding.  Bad things do happen to good people.  We can volunteer and share one can of beans, or a box of potato buds.  You can buy one really large can of green beans for $6 -- that would make a great dent in a dinner for a family.  It's so simple to ease pain.

Tish;  You are so right Trish.  Even in this economy, if everyone helps "just a little", it will make a difference.  My favorite charity is the Alzheimer's Organization.  My mom died from the disease and I am hearing about soooo many others, whose parents are at the beginning stages.  Because of the overwhelming situation, I started a new branch of my firm to help "the children" of these folks.  On another note, it is great to know that there are such nice people in the Wilmington area as we are considering a move there.  Sorry, Trish, we already have a real estate agent!

Linda ~ Every little bit does help!  And how awesome of you to help the children of those with alzheimers!

The Wilmington area, particularly Wrightsville Beach, is a GREAT place to live and I'm glad you have found an agent to work with.  Sorry it's not me, but there are some really great agents here so I'm sure you are in good hands!
