Stuart, Florida Treasure Coast Breaking News - Community Localism

Treasure Coast Communities, Stuart, Florida House of Refuge Museum at Gilbert's Bar - Stuart, Florida's history is worth sharing.  Did you know that the House of Refuge at Gilbert's Bar is the last remaining shipwreck, life-saving station on Florida's Treasure Coast?  This landmark is one of Martin County's oldest buildings and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  It was built back in 1876 to help stranded sailors.  It was occupied by a keeper and his family, who after storms, walked along the shore, searching for shipwrecked victims.

When the United States entered into World War II, and after the Pearl Harbor attack, the Coast Guard Station at Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge gained more importance.  In 1942, freighters were torpedoed by German U-Boats along the Treasure Coast, so a Lookout Tower was erected at this same site.

Today this historical landmark is a museum exhibiting life-saving equipment used over the years and showcases the Keeper's quarters - circa 1904.  If you are ever visiting Stuart, Florida on the Treasure Coast, this historical home is worth the visit.  Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge is owned by Martin County and operated by the Historical Society.

History worth sharing, as part of my community commitment in promoting the lifestyle, culture, arts, 365 things to do on the treasure coast, and supporting Martin County, Florida LEADERship Program.
