Have You Turned On the Heat Yet?

Chip and I use the chill as just one more excuse to snuggle. We may never turn it on!

I'm in Arizona, but in the mountains at 5,000 ft. Usually by this time we're freezing, or at least frosting. This year we're 70s (80s till last weekend) and 40s at night. Haven't used the heat yet- haven't even disconnected the cooler yet. My tomato plants are still going strong.

This is the time of year that we see a break on our utilitiy bills. For the past 2 weeks I have been able to keep the A/C off. I welcome the cooler weather here in Florida. Today is 76 degrees, light wind  and sunny.

56 degrees would definitely freeze us out!  We have to flip the heat on when the needle dips below about 66.  However we've only had it on once this year which is rare in Wyoming!

Cheat a little and turn on the heat, to 65 degrees before you catch a bad cold.

When ever you all turn on the furnace, be there for an hour with out leaving the house. Watch that everything seems to be operating under it's normal parameters, and you fill heat from the registers. Also see the thermostat is working and sensing the room temp., watch that it has increased. Just a few safety precautions so that you don't leave the newly started furnace running unattended.

I just showed one of my listings.. which is vacant. When I walked in ahead of the appointment I couldn't believe how cold it was in there. Turns out the furnace wsa turned off. My Seller is in Floridia not thinking about the cold weather... Good reminder for all the cold weather agents to check their vacant listings to make sure the furnace is on and working this Fall.

Winter, does not mean hibernating. We like snow, think about skiing, snowsledding, ice hockey in New England! If your home is insulated, if you don't wear a t shirt in the middle of winter and wonder why you are cold, it can be fun. I can not do the humidity of a Miami Florida. Vacation is okay, but working and drenched in sweat 20 minutes after a shower and off to work, through out the day..no thanks.

Perfect timing, I broke down and turned mine on for about an hour today. It's been off since 9/27 (it was AC full blast up until then). I got me some thin blood these days after surviving our 100 days of 100 degree weather this summer.

Great blog!  We got the woodstove fired up with a small fire every other morning now.  The house is drafty, the wood floors cold, and the kids have running noses galore if we don't do something to heat it up! 

Plus there's the added benefit of Daddy getting to cook over the flames inside the home!  Cast iron cooking season has come!

And - say good bye to the pesky flies!

Hi Liz - At the other end of the spectrum, we haven't quite turned off the A/C in Las Vegas yet. But we are getting very close to the time of year where we don't need A/C or heat for a month or two.

Heat??? my air conditioner is still running,  .I expect another month or so before I can turn the system off and open the windows until next summer 

There are lots of reasons for living in SW Florida, but winter weather is #1. It attracts the snow birds and their money and makes my business go.  The only downside is the traffic that comes with them

Hi Elizabeth -- I hear ya! An exceptionally warm down comforter does wonders.  I keep it very low at night, 60 for me, but I'm toasty under this incredible down comforter -- that is, until the alarm bell goes off!

I was forced to turn on the AC in Sept and early Oct.  It was 90 a couple of days and the huskies leave me little choice. Heat stroke is a risk.  I WON'T turn on the heat WON'T for another 2-3 weeks if I can stand it.  It goes off by mid-April - even if I freeze.  that's just the way its going to be until my finances improve.

I turned on the heat. we also use space heaters, so that we don't have to heat up the whole house. I have small children, and in my understanding, it's important for them to be in warm environment. Some dollars I will save over the heating bill are not worth a bad cold my children can catch. They throw off blankets at night, even if it's cold, and if the room is chill, they will wake up with bad cough - it runs in my husband's family. 

so - it's start of heating season for us.

I'm amazed how hardy everybody is though! 

In Temecula, it has been raining nonstop! Considering the heat tonight :)

I’m curious as to why you try to wait until November 1 before turning on the heat. If I need the heat or cooling, I simply use them. I like to be comfortable. Of course, here in San Diego, I rarely use them since my windows are open most of the time so that I can enjoy our mostly beautiful weather.

It has cooled down a little bit in Vegas also and thanks for rubbing in the wonderful weather of San Diego Russel. The great weather in San Diego will be bringing me there soon!
