In his roughly 19 months of campaigning for the U.S. Senate, Kendrick Meek has made every attempt to become the candidate for Florida's working class.

At a visit to American Airlines mechanics in Miami, Meek recalled his high school days as a skycap at Miami International Airport, where he hauled bags for travelers to make a few extra bucks.

During a chat with an Orange County teachers union, Meek spoke proudly about his days as a star outside linebacker on the Florida A&M University football team, but also hinted at his not-so-glamorous struggle with dyslexia.

Just outside his headquarters in downtown Orlando, Meek said his years as a state trooper taught him how to be a problem solver but also made him work hard for what he wanted, particularly a standard shift Ford Bronco.

"I always keep it real. I'm just like you. I put my pants on one leg at a time," the Democratic candidate said during a late September road tour through South and Central Florida.

I haven't been a Florida resident since 1987 but I have heard about the race down there. I am glad he is keeping it real. I hope that translates to reasonable government spending, budget management, and more jobs in the Sunshine State.
