Heyward House Museum Center, 70 Boundary Street in Bluffton.  This is a historic house museum with docent led tours, free map for walking tours.  Built around 1841, the Heyward House Museum Center has been completely resotored.  843-757-6293

Coastal Discovery Museum, 100 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head Island.  The kids will enjoy a visit here to learn about Natural History walks, bird watching, sea turtle information, alligator talks, native islander history exhibits and specially scheduled events.  843-689-6767

The Sandbox Museum, An interactive Children's Museum for babies through age 8.  The perfect place on a hot summer day to cool off with the kiddos.  Exhibits include a jet cockpit, climbing wall, pirate ship with costumes, an international cafe and art center.  843-842-7645

Palmetto Bluff Museum, This is a free small museum located in the beautiful and picturesque community of Palmetto Bluff.  Here you can learn everything about the Yemassee tribe to local animals and wildlife.  It details the history of the 22,000 acre development that is located across from the May River from Old Town Bluffton.   843-706-6020

Good morning Diane,

Such a wonderful post with information on the museums and history of your area....it's nice to see that heritage is valued in the Hilton Head region.
Perhaps you would consider re-posting this article and including it in the Heritage Properties, Historic Sites and Antiques group...I would like to feature it there....and we would love to have you as a member.

Rick and Ines,

Thanks for commenting--Yes, we have a lot of interesting local history and I feel it's important for tourists to know about our Lowcountry.  Hope you get to visit here someday.
