Hi Ginny,
Interesting blog to me. We have enjoyed cheap water here for a long time and I would say we are Gobblers. That may not be the case down the road. We recently got notice that instead of a quarterly bill, we would soon be billed monthly. Reason, to allow us to notice a large increase in water consumption sooner. Now with the quarterly bills, one is to think it is just a seasonal thing. So many here have sprinklers that run automatically 365 days a year.
Water is the commodity of the future as population grows. . If you have ever experienced water rationing you will never fully appreciate how lucky you are that you have running water inside your home.
Barbara...it's for our children of all generations that we need to be more conservation oriented.
Scott, oh these are true water usage figures in MY town...alot of sprinkler systems running here & we are suppose to be rationing water in the summer to running outside water to every other day but it didn't work.
Ellen...in the hot states i'm sure water usage is a big issue that's why sustainable plantings may be the answer.
Fernando...i so hear you and i wouldn't want rationing inside the home with someone else flipping the switch off and on but who knows what is down the road for us...rather pre-empt that possibility...thanks
Ginny, water is certainly another natural resource that we take for granted. After I get the power under control, this will be the next frontier. Many good points made here...
we always conserve water whenever we have the opportunity. It just good common sense.
Michael...keep the power going- all my newly installed recessed lights will be LED due to your post! thanks
Susan...thank you so much for stopping by & re-blogging...and spreading the word..
Very interesting post! I've never been one to drink much water or take long showers, but now I'm going to pay closer attention to the water I do use.
Thanks for sharing!
Ginny, as we hear daily about our natural resources becoming scarce, we do need to become a sipper! Our summer was so dry, the water usage in the summer for our yards probably is 3 times, but I have done very similar savings with LED light bulbs, unplugging my office equipment (LOTS of electric), have a clothesline and love the smell of the clothes after taking them down, especially bedding!
Kathleen...we all tend to not think about it sometimes but as you say it's the conscious awareness of this resource that is important..thanks too
Joan...good for you and it is great the smell of fresh clothes line dried...use to hate the way the towels felt but i've adjusted...it's like eating tofu- adapt! best
Thank you for sharing this VERY important info>
Always such good information Ginny. I remember watching Chinatown, which is all about delivering water to the masses. Funny, we haven't thought hard about such things since the 30's.
Paul...thank you for stopping by...
Scott...gee, i don't remember that part of the movie (that was some movie)... it's all about just being a bit more respectful of our environment i hope!
I watched a documentairy film called "Blue Gold", there is a lot of truth to your statistics! The movie said that the Bush family has purchased a few thousand acres in south America above one of the worlds largest aquifers...maybe they know something about this that others dont?
Ginny....I'm not very good at this sipping stuff!!! I'm a gobbler and I'll admit it....is there group therapy for me??? I like a very healthy green lawn....I don't collect rain in barrels....I don't like the way barrels look in my yard....I have sprinkler heads in the gardens....Now What????
Barabara, I'm definitely putting you into therapy!!..more xeriscape landscaping might help and tall ornamental grasses hide rain barrels, perhaps...at least focus on your electric consumption then if all else fails!

Nice post Ginny. Because I live in the desert I'm acutely aware of the water situation. The city encourages desert landscaping that doesn't gobble the water and as a community we do a pretty good job of conserving.
Great idea for a post and what an important conversation we need to be having! This scares me a bit when I think about how this will impact my daughter!
Ginny...another excellent, informative post! Just drove by someone's house this evening, around 4:30 p.m., who had the inground sprinklers going...and we're expecting a Nor'easter tonight!! Personally, I think inground sprinklers should be banned. It is a frightening prospect to think about our children and grandchildren dealing with water shortages. Erika said that her city encourages desert landscaping. We all need to shift our thinking about what constitutes a beautiful yard and landscape.
Betsy, it is very scary for the parts of the country that will be held hostage by other parts & who knows where this will lead down the line...
Nina...I've just had instances with clients wells and sprinklers and the wells nearly running dry...clients didn't understand that you really can't have sprinklers if you have a well (HELLO!)...light bulb moments...it's more than that it's our have everything culture that overlooks these issues. Yes, the west is more responsible than we are in the NE...start planting better
