43 Comments on A deadly Killer...
This subject was brought to my attention recently over a rental unit. The people moving in were not able to get the gas company to turn on the water heater. I called the gas company and after having 3 different people come out and discussing this for quite a while, they turned it on. One of the tests was to hold a match right above the unit where it vents and see if the flame is drawn upward. When I did it, it worked. When the tenant did it, it did not. When the gas company did it, it worked 1 out of 3 times. Last word on the subject.....get a detector. They are not expensive and it it puts the matter to bed....Good post and thank you William
I have a good friend whose husband was playing cards at home with two friends. They inexplicably felt tired and fell asleep - my friend's husband died due to this exact thing happening. This is a very serious threat - thanks for the warning.
A great closing gift....is a carbon monoxide detector. Remind your client to plug it into a low outlet. If its in a higher outlet (counter height), they could be affected by the carbon monoxide before the alarm sounds.
It is that time of year again. Thanks for the heads up.
Absolutely important information as we head into the winter season - thank you! ~ Susan
A very good time of year for a reminder like this - We've had some sad stories in our area - that make you think twice about carbon monoxide - thanks for the reminder...
I would like to thank everyone for the interest in this blog. Please share this with everyone you know. My wife and I over the last 4 years have been giving these as Christmas gifts and annonymous Santa.
Hi William -- I have a Nighthawk CO2 detector installed into an electrical outlet in the hall outside the bedroom area -- we have a gas, forced-air system. Very, very important.
An easy and simple fix to a deadly, unwanted, invisible intruder. No homeowner should feel secure without one and a smoke detector also. Another great reminder William!
And don't forget that most of the detectors have a lifespan. We just got a new one. It is good for 7 years.
Great reminder heading into winter, and something that can easily and economically be implemented. I hope the media will be proactive with info like this.
Hello Bill - Carbon Monoxide is a very serious hazard. I see problems with furnaces and other systems all the time that could be fatal if not corrected.
Never fails every year when the heater goes on....I get sick. Appreciate the Perfect reminder Thank you.
Excellent and timely advice William...
William--Yep it's that time of year...check those batteries and make certain the smoke and CO detectors are working!
That's scary! I had no idea that a furnace could be so deadly!
Great blog reminder --- as we are just turning on our furnaces. We have a law in Colorado - you MUST have a working CO detector within 15 feet of any legal bedroom, and is the seller's responsibility to install.
There is no reason for one more person to die needlessly over Carbon Monoxide poisoning... not with detectors so readily available... thanks for the post, I will re-blog your post to remind my audience.
Great advice. CO poisoning is so easy to prevent... if people would just buy a couple of monitors. It doesn't take a large amount of ppm to cause serious health trouble.
