Helping Others Can Help You

Here is a blog I recently wrote for Realtor.com.  The article was inspired by the book "The Go-Giver" coauthored by Bob Burg and John David Mann.  If you haven't read this or "The Go-Giver Sells More", I highly recommend them.

In this ever changing economy it is often very hard to look past our current financial situation and think of providing services to others.  Human nature dictates you take care of your needs above all else.  What if we went against what feels “right” and actually spent time working to help others?  Could that help us in our own endeavors?  Of course it could, and here is how.

I am sure that if you looked around your neighborhood, you can find at least one house that is poorly maintained, run down and vacant.  The previous owners could not afford to keep it so the home is now owned by a bank, which does not seem to care that the weeds are overgrown and the paint is peeling.

But you care as a homeowner, a neighbor and a person.  Maybe your situation is you are currently looking for work, or waiting for that perfect job offer to come along.  You love your neighborhood and want to see it flourish again. Why not take the current free time you have available and make it valuable?

It would not take much to organize a small group of people.  Include your local REALTOR® to assist with connections in the community to donate funding or find a landscaper or general contractor to donate their services or equipment for the morning.  Ask the neighbors to pitch in and help.  Pick a few hours on Saturday or Sunday morning for your group to meet at one or more of the houses, clean up the yard, spruce up the chipping paint, sweep the porch, mend the fence and make it looked loved.  From this wonderful act you have just created a team of people who believe in you and trust you.  You have created friendships and loyalty.

At the end of the day you will look back and feel good about what you accomplished.  Not because you may have connected with a career lead, but because you helped and served your community.  You have given your neighbors renewed interest in their homes.  You have created good will and some will pay it forward.  That in itself will make you feel like a success.

I was cleaning out some of my paperwork yesterday and found this gem by Albert Schweitzer that I'd saved on a little card.  "I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know; the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve".
