How to Make Your Home Buying Experience Awesome

By
Real Estate Agent with Steinborn & Associates Real Estate

I have worked with hundreds of buyers over the span of my career in real estate. If you're looking for a sure way to make your home buying process fun, I have the solution.

Start Before You Need To

First, it's best if you start early and give yourself time to find the right home. While this won't necessarily work for everyone, it's fun to be in the drivers seat, and to know that you can walk away at any moment. If you're in that position, then your experience can be very fun. You can wait for the perfect home, negotiate, walk away, and start again.

Dream Big and Share Your Dreams

Second, let yourself dream. Sit down with your family, brainstorm, and make a list of everything you ever wanted in a home. Don't even talk about whether or not you can afford it. This is fun, plus it helps you identify focus points for your actual search. Share that list with your Realtor. Sometimes something that seems expensive and far fetched is actually within reach.

Good Ideas. I deal mostly with Canadians, & they sometimes take at least a year to make up their minds. First time here, they are on holiday & think it might be an idea to think about real estate. I get them to make a list of absolutely have to haves, would be nice to haves, would take if availables, and absolutely don't wants.  I put them on MLS portals so they can keep up with the market, housing trends, prices etc. Next time they come down, I tell them to drive the neighborhoods they have chosen, before they go out with me. If they hate the area, it doesn't waste my time. Then we can concentrate on areas they love. Sometimes they buy on the second trip, but more likley it's the thrid time lucky charm for buying. I have had to learn a lot of patience with the Canadians. Not hard since I are one.

Of course, patience is something we all have these days as we wait for gov'ts and banks to DO SOMETHING! Cheers, Mary

Those are great ideas Evelyn. I always have my clients make a list of "must haves", "would be nice" and "definitely not".  It not only helps them get a clearer vision of what they are looking for in a home, but it helps me in the housing search.  Plus, as we go down the road and they get tired of looking (and they start making compromises) I can remind them of what they thought was important.  I have found that they really do appreciate me helping them stay focused.

Thanks for the feedback and sharing your ideas. @Mary Maxie, I like the way you break down your list. I'm using that next time.
