Next Hot Neighbourhoods

Before I get to the list, I will note that other than being the magazine's Associate Editor, Gillian Grace is not a registered salesperson/broker, and she does not present her qualifications, cite sources, nor quote statistics to support her real estate prognostication.

But emblazoned on the cover of this month's "Toronto Life", we see the eye catching title, "WHERE TO BUY NOW" - "THE NEXT HOT NEIGHBOURHOODS*". And let's not forget the reassuring footnote in the corner, "everything you need to know before you buy"!

Yes, Toronto Life's Gillian Grace, picks 5 up-and-coming Toronto neighbourhoods, as home buyers seek out bargain alternatives to the higher-priced, "hot" neighbourhods, namely:

  • Beaconsfield Village (the "next" Trinity-Bellwoods)
  • Hillcrest (the "next" Annex)
  • The Junction (the "next" High Park)
  • Leslieville (the "next" Riverdale)
  • Mimico (the "next" Beach)

Another forecasting strategy would be to throw a dart, while blind-folded, at a map of Toronto. With the run-up in real estate in recent years, and continued healthy market, it's hard to find neighbourhoods which haven't undergone some transformation or urban gentrification.

Consumers would be well-advised to consult a professional.

Hey good press helps our business...citing hot neighborhoods in magazines is why people buy real estate.  I don't think anyone things the magazine editor is a broker...neither is she a fashion designer when she says that the skirt is hot or the bikini is hot....nor travel agent when they tell you where to vacation.  Write articles for the magazine on why it is hot to consult a professional.

Lighten up.  At least it doesn't say don't buy now!!!

Wow Anthon, looks like this got you a little hot. I figure telling people to buy is a good thing. You don't have to be qualified (in my book) to advise people to buy real estate.

Good press is a good thing.  Bad press is an altogether different thing.  And this piece didn't meet my standards for well researched journalism.

Buying a home is a huge investment.  Consider if instead, the author had presented her top 5 stock picks.

I simply don't believe a one page synopsis can provide a buyer -- who is unfamiliar with a particular neighbourhood -- "everything you need to know".  Nowhere does a buyer see information that an area borders on gang territory, is notorious for wet basements, or where termite inspections are highly recommended.
