Isn't It Just Realtors Talking To Realtors? What Good Does That Do?

By
Real Estate Agent with Cherimie Crane & Associates

Have you ever tried to explain something to a puppy? Or maybe have an intellectual conversation with a tree stump? Or possibly, you have found yourself offering a raft to a sinking ship only to have the ill-fated cruisers look away? There comes a point when the puppy resumes chewing your shoes, the stump politely refuses communication, the the &^%#$ boat sinks. It happens.

It never ceases to amaze me at the sheer determination of others to find excuses, not reasons, for the success of the successful. It is obviously because of the successful person's connections, gender, hair style or maybe even the way they freaking eat their breakfast; it can't possibly be a credit to their hard work, determination, or intelligence.

Exactly how much energy or effort does it require to conjure up this creative casserole of comfort??? Probably a whole lot more than the energy it takes to pull up your bootstraps.

(Breathe, sip wine, curse under breathe, type with a vengeance)

I have been telling anyone who would listen about the cornucopia that is Active Rain. It is official, I have heard every single reason why it would never work for them, their clients, their dog, or their freaking sinking boat.

Noted. I am from Mississippi. I talk slow, even slower when accompanied by a good Merlot; but I am not stupid.

The most recent objective to participating in the world of Active Rain, was about as brilliant as parachuting without a parachute.

"It is just Realtors talking to Realtors; what good does that do?"

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where everything your grandmother ever told you was flying through your head like superman on crack??? Well, I have. Most of it was about watching my mouth, sitting like a lady, and not chewing gum; however, there were lovely little nuggets of "You can't argue with a crazy person." Thanks Mamaw.

My ability to maintain the commandments of southern graces has been depleted. Successful people will always find a way to be successful, those comforted by the gaggle of gripers will always have a novel of excuses tucked nicely in their back pocket.

Active Rain is an enormous benefit to my clients. I learn something new every day. I market their listings to a network of over 193,000. What good does it do????? It keeps me from the gaggle of gripers, the sinking ^%$#% boat, and conversing with an anti-social tree stump. No, it won't stop my dog from chewing my shoes, but you can't win them all.

(Mamaw if you are reading this, I am sorry for saying ^%$#% and freaking)

That's the rumor, I hear it all the time. Of course it is far from true. AR is an awesome community of people who learn and share information freely. Not only that it makes the phone ring.

When I first stumbled upon Active Rain I had the same reaction. "This is just Realtors talking with Realtors."  Well, it is actually a lot more than that.  Now I get it.

Active Rain was presented to all in my office. At 55 I am one of the youngest there and they can't see the value. I do get asked alot by them "where did you get that idea"? I quit answering that question because they sit around doing nothing but complaining, when they could be reading Active Rain.

Cherimie, where do these people think referrals come from if not from other REALTORS®. I keep telling everyone about ActiveRain and keep getting the same excuses. They are going to miss the SEO train.

Cherimie, this is a great post!  I wish I had a nickle for every time I have heard  "well, that won't work for me".

I have come to realize over these many years that if something is not free and if it takes any real effort or time there are agents that will not do it.

These times, they are a changing!  I firmly believe that Realtors who do not use advanced technology, become members of networking groups, and think out side of every box they have ever seen before will become the SHADOW AGENTS OF THE INDUSTRY.  These will be the ones still trying to hang on and blaming their faillure on everything but themslves.

"It is just Realtors talking to Realtors"  drives me nuts.  I have heard it in tech classes conducted by my company. I heard it at the first virtual rebarcamp last November or December?  You can hear it from people who don't get it but you can also hear it from people who do get it and people who are concerned that ActiveRain is too strong.  I have heard it at a IRL rebarcamp by people who participated at one point but are not active. Those who are not active and would prefer no one else be either?

I call "It's just Realtors talking to Realtors" the ActiveRain heresy.

Wow.. Love your candor and your writing.  I think that phrase should be one of the site's taglines: 'ActiveRain: It's just REALTORS© talking to REALTORS©'If you don't get the benefits or the power behind that sentence, then you should go somewhere else and figure it out . :-)

Hi Cherimie,  I guess we have all " invited " many others to share in the 'Rain only to see them not follow through or to make a half  %#@ed attempt.  Sometimes we just can't help others !

Doom and gloom...I love those people. It makes our job easier when we go against them for a listing or buyer client.

Haha, this is great! I have felt both ways about Active Rain -- that it is just Realtors talking to Realtors, AND that it is very beneficial. I may still be sitting on the fence a bit, but I appreciate your honest post, and enjoy your writing style.

STILL the best story teller in the rain!

It is much easier for some people to look for an excuse than to actually work towards being successful.  They are afraid to fail, so they will never step out of their own rut and will never be a success because of it.

The best we can do is not allow them to pee in our cherios... Let them come to you to ask what you are doing that is working, no need to present it to them, if they dont ask the obviously dont see a need... And even if they do ask... Remember: You can lead a horse to water.......

Cherimie, I have heard this same argument.  I guess those agents have never heard of "agent referrals".  I stopped trying to convince people that it's worthwhile.  And it's the best kept secret in my office.  I see the agents in my office trying everything to keep afloat.  Everything except blogging.

I must say that the information gathered in AR has allowed me to see a little deeper into the depths of a Realtors brain. It definitely helps when processing transactions, and the think to myself, how would I get "Sally" Realtor to understand why this document is important. AR really does help!
