Where Have All the Realtors Gone?

By

Have you noticed lately that your local agents are dropping like flies? The other day I stopped in at one of Sam Walton's Super Stores and there in the media isle stood one of my former agents. We will call her X-merelda. Now, X-merelda was truly a very conciencious Agent when she was selling homes for our company. She was formidable, trustworthy, hardworking, honest, and her follow-up was darned good.

She stammered a bit when I hugged her. "I just wasn't getting enough leads, she said. We simply needed the money so here I am!"

"HUH", I said.

We said our good-byes and that was that.

There is actually a point to this story. The point is that we can all give up when the going gets rough or we can advertise! That is basically our option these days. Advertise or wilt into the garden of dried up flowers.

Our reputations, as flowers do, need to be nurtured, watered, pruned, and loved. At times we have to cut the stems back and work like mad to grow a new "start". Working like mad, staying on top of Social Media, allowing our presence to be known is eXactly what it takes to get ahead these days.

I plan to take my own advice and not drop like a fly! My mantra now is to learn all I can to eXercise Social Media, and with the help of Jonathan Usher, Social Media Guru, I am going to make that happen.

Have a wonderful evening and get back to work.

I feel bad for her. I think most realtors love the business and want to stay but when your bills start stacking up and you feel like you are drowning, you need to do what you have to do.

I always find this amazing that people just bail out of a real estete career instead of becoming the super agent with great marketing skills. Secretly, I am pleased because our business does not need quiters, the inexperienced or bottom-feeders.  The strong will survive. I plan to stay in that group.

Lanita, don't feel bad for her. It was her decision. As a Mentor I was available and ready to help in any way. She chose the easy road. It's all a choice.

Lizette, me too. That just means that we are a "special" breed. Those that will fight to the end, right? You go girl.

Nina, thank you. You are taking the meaning of this post for what it is! Work smart and hard and become a success!

We have to always keep out name out there and continue to stay up with the times and educate ourselves.  Alot of agents dont understand how to market or desire to do some (out of the box) or simple advertising that doesnt cost alot.  Agents get into the biz because they think it will be easy and the phones will ring if they just come to the office... true they ring for those that people ask for by name!  You are the exception striving to learn more, best wishes!

Many people get into the business because they want to see houses. Great way to become a real estate statistic.

Lot's and lot's of people get into real estate because they think that it's quick easy money and after a few months the realization slaps them in the face that it's waaaaaaayyyyy harder than it looks.  So.... they head off in search of something easier because a lot of them really didn't want to work, they just wanted the fast money.....

Deb - We just had this conversation this afternoon in my broker's office about the headcount in MLS shrinking and how there are less funds from dues readily available for our local Realtor's association to allocate towards special events and Realtor political action committees.  Yes, they are dropping like flies but that means there will be less agents to compete with so I don't mind a bit.

Deb, nothing wrong with multiple streams of income with real estate, but the thinning of the herd is actually good for the industry.

It's easy to say you are not getting enough leads but the question is what are you doing to generate leads? I know how easy it is to put off prospecting but it has to be done.

Never figured I'd be dropping like a fly but for the past year I have been on the edge and I expect to give up real estate at some point.  For me real estate has always been more work and less reward then my other business so although I enjoy some aspects of being a Realtor it is becoming increasingly difficult to justify devoting my time to this profession.

Deb I am actually surprised there have not been more agents that have left the field. It seems there are quite a few hanging by a string:)
