My life is rarely without drama and this week has been no exception. Last week my daughter was offered a job after a series of interviews and physical tests. Tuesday she went to take her physical and be fitted for uniforms. She was finishing up with her physical when she took her eye exam. For those of you who don't know, my Abigail has amblyopia. She has left eye dominate and 20/200 vision in her right eye and so her brain doesn't recognize what her right eye is looking at. When she was asked to read the eye chart with her right eye... the big E at the top is as good as it gets.
So her "hired" status was put on hold while the physician "researched" it before she could be medically cleared to be hired as a EMT. When she got the news I was her first phone call. I wasn't really sure if she was more upset or mad. Abigail has never viewed herself as in any way impaired or challenged. She simply adjusted. She played softball, she read music and played her trumpet on the left side (with her left hand) so she could see the music (she is right handed). And she is a excellent driver.
Not much sleep in our house last night because we were all worried that she wasn't going to get the job after all the schooling and hard work over the past year. Today she was medically cleared and goes back tomorrow to get fitted for her uniforms. She will begin orientation on Monday. She's already had calls of current EMTs asking if she can cover their shifts for them.
It was an emotional roller coaster.
And I have to tell you, the fact she's going to be working as am EMT in a town that has a murder rate of more than triple the national average. Most of her first three paychecks will be going for her paying for her own bullet proof vest.
So while my daughter who has choose as her life's mission to help other people ventures out into the real world for the first time to help others starts on Monday I would really appreciate you saying a little prayer that she will be safe as she works to help others.
Later today, I am going to the Georgia National Fair. There will be photos.... and I will have roasted corn. But Roger, I may just skip the funnel cake.
