The ski / snowboard season gets underway at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area in Mammoth Lakes, CA this Thursday, November 9.

This brings the onset of visitors.  They say our serious buyer is in September and October, there is far more quantity as ski season gets underway.  The problem we experience in our market during ski season and especially peaked occupancy times, is that many of the units for sale are on rental programs and occupied.  This makes showings especially difficult.

Recently, I aligned myself with a virtual tour provider out of Colorado who utilizes the IPIX technology.  In agreement with him and his company, I've been provided equipment to offer virtual tours in my area.  As a new agent, this is a great way to supplement my income without having to resort to a full time job.  Many area REALTORS are seeing the value in a virtual tour to show a property in lieu of being able to actually go into the unit.  I've heard people say that they have made an offer on a property from the virtual tour alone.

5 Comments on Ski Season Approaching - High Occupancy means No Showings

Hi Stacie,

The virtual tours are amazing. I use a company that charges $80 cdn. Included is 4 room tours and 8 pics for the mls.

Regarding the difficulty and showings, why not offer a case of beer for a spare key? In Vancouver, BC, most skiers are younger people who would appreciate such a gesture.

Stacie, didn't know anyone from Mammoth was here on AR! I grew up in S.F. Valley and use to go to Mammoth 2 times a month with family. We use to own on Old Mammoth road where it ended, a trailer park. And a condo out the same way. Learned to ski at June. I was there for the big earthquake and a few REALLY big storms. Bet I wouldn't know the place now.

I think you're referring to Ski Trails Mobile Home Park.  Old Mammoth goes quite a bit further down now.  How long ago did you have a place here?  I've been here for about 5 years but I've heard the history and how things have changed from long time locals.

When I first moved to the area, I rented a little forest service cabin in June Lake.  Going from city life to the small mountain village of June Lake was quite an adjustment.  But I love living here in the mountains.

Do you get to mammoth much anymore?  With the airport nearing completion and scheduled flights are within sight, it may be easier to get here more conveniently from more places.  Where abouts are you based now if no longer in SF Valley?

I haven't been there since 1983-4? It's been awhile and I'm sure I wouldn't know the place at all. And a new airport? I flew in once or twice on a 6 passenger plane, bumpie flight to say the least. The Mono Airport? I remember there was a hot springs near by, we use to sneak onto a ranchers land to go. The last time I was there they turned it into a park to the public, I think. I learn to drive on the highway from L.A. to Mammoth.

My folks got a divorce and I moved to Denver in 1981. I now live in Canon City, Colorado. A far cry from Canoga Park! Some day I'll get back for a visit and get lost.

Wow, a lot has sure happened since the 80's.

The airport is the Mammoth Yosemite Airport and has been approved for regional service.  There is an airport commission that meets to move the process along.  We're expecting scheduled flights to begin the 2007/2008 season (next December).

There are lots of the natural hot springs around, some easy to get to and some more difficult.  Back in the 80's you may have gone to Hot Creek.  It was a popular swimming spot for many years until just this past spring when it was closed to swimming.  The closure was due to new vents in the areas close to where swimming occurred.  Just last week I was out there looking at the creek from the trail above and you can actually see the water boiling out of the creek.  They think this was due to the higher water level due to the overwhelming snow accumulation from last winter.

I understand Colorado resorts are getting off to a great season with large snow fall already.
