Keyword stuffing is one of the oldest spamming techniques on the Internet. Many webmasters still use that technique although most search engines can detect it nowadays.

Last week, Google's anti-spam engineer Matt Cutts made fun of a website that used keyword stuffing. Apart from the rather dubious content of the web page, the webmaster included a very long list of related and unrelated keywords in a small text box at the end of the page.

Google doesn't like keyword stuffing

"Keyword stuffing is considered to be an unethical search engine optimization (SEO) technique.

Keyword stuffing occurs when a web page is loaded with keywords in the meta tags or in content. The repetition of words in meta tags may explain why many search engines no longer use these tags." (Wikipedia definition)

Google doesn't like keyword stuffing at all. If Google detects keyword stuffing on a web page, that page will be banned from Google's index. Google's Matt Cutts puts it that way:

"Webmasters are free to do what they want on their own sites, but Google reserves the right to do what we think is best to maintain the relevance of our search results, and that includes taking action on keyword stuffing."

You might use keyword stuffing on your web pages without knowing it

While most keyword stuffing is done intentional, it can also happen that your web pages trigger Google's spam filters although you didn't want to spam.

For example, if you have very similar keywords that are used often on your web pages, this might look like keyword stuffing.

This SEO stuff is so complicated - sometimes it feels like fighting with the FICO scoring model.  Goodness.

So how many words is considered "stuffing".  If your blog is on Redding Real Estate, it seems to me that you need those words in your website.

I personally think that too much time and energy is spent on SEO.  NOt sure what the right answer is.

Kate,

Without spending a fair amount of time and energy on SEO, any activities and money spent on your website will be lost.  SEO is possibly the most important thing you can do for your website.  It drives the traffic to your site, which brings the qualified and motivated leads.  That being said, I do agree its about as hard to figure out as a FICO score.  Its a complex algorithm, and like any big industry... the only people who know how it works are the ones who made it happen.

Daniel - in theory you are correct.  In practice you can do as well with blogging and in picking a smart domain name relative to your key words.  You blogs should contain links to your current website.

I know from personal experience that too many people spend too much time on SEO.  Type in Redding Mortgage Broker - I'm #5.  Type in Redding Mortgage, I'm #2 - I don't even have a website.

When I get my website up and running I intend to dominate the rankings - with minimial effort on SEO.

Understand that I'm an expert marketer and am trained at lead generation and direct response marketing.  Real Estate agents will have much greater success if they drive traffic to their website through blog content and stop focusing so much time energy and money on SEO.

I've been meaning to post on this issue.  Thanks for the reminder.

Kate, But think about it what is a blog ? A blog is a website with ever changing information. Add some keywords and make sure you stay on track ( good content ) and you have a highly successful website. The only difference is the placement of the information Website versus Blog. Kate thanks for the comment. And Kate t really does not take a lot of time. Norco Homes or Norco Homes for Sale on Google and I usually am #5 or less.

Kate, ever seen a website with small font and greyed text with just a whole page of keyword text. Most of the time stuffed in the lower part of the page extending it much farther down than most viewers will scroll down to ? That is a prime example of keyword stuffing.

Hey everyone get the book Search Engine Optimization: An Hour a Day and read it. SEO is not that complicated it is some specific things you must do. There are far to many opinions out there about SEO and they are just that. There is a definate right and wrong way to approach it. It does not take long to setup, what takes the time is that it can take a few months for your rankings to improve.

Doug - that's my point exactly.  I'm not saying that SEO has no value or that it should be ignored.  I'm simply saying that people waste lots of energy and money trying to optimize their websites through traditional methods.  Choosing a few key words and then using them in blogs gets results faster.  Keep your website link in your blog posts and you have both link exchanges and SEO in one simple to follow strategy without paying a dime to "experts" who don't deliver on their promise.

I've never even tried traditional SEO techniques on any of the websites that I've had and I get in the top 5 ranking with every targeted key word I choose using this strategy.  Notice that I say targeted - I don't try for the broader scoped key words.
