I've been eating at Thomas Bar-B-Q for the last 4 years...ever since I moved to Madison Alabama.  There's no good excuse for not writing about it until now, but I'm glad the light finally went on.  Thomas Bar-B-Q is owned and operated by James Thomas second generation in the same location for the last 44 years.  His father Issac opened the business and taught his son the secret of success...put out an outstanding product with a huge side dish of friendly service.

This is where the magic happens...the smoke house...and I say that with a certain amount of reverence, because through the door of this building passes some of the best smoked beef, pork, ribs and chicken that I have tasted. Of course taste is completely subjective and others might have a different opinion after all there are other Bar-B-Q diners in town that do a very good business. Madison Alabama is not my first experience with Bar-B-Q...as my father worked for a man in Kansas City who owned several Bar-B-Q diners.  They also had a smoke house in down town Kansas City, but the process was a little different...racks filled with briskets in a hickory smoke filled room...you couldn't stay in the room very long.  Thomas is a little different as you can walk into the smoke house and the meats are in covered pits.

This is who makes the magic happen...Mr. Larry Harris.  Larry spied me taking pictures of the diner...I don't think he was too sure of me so he wanted to introduce me to the owner James Thomas.  Anyway, I explained to James what I was doing and he turned out to be very congenial and left me in the capable hands and smiling face of Larry.  Larry is one of those gentlemen that you have to listen to because he has a story to tell.  He took me on a tour, however short it was of the smoke house and made sure that I knew all about Thomas Bar-B-Q.  We talked for a while about our common interest then I had to get going...I thanked him and was on my way.  After getting to my car I realized that I didn't have a photo of Larry, so I went back one more time to the wonderful smell of the smoke house to find Larry.  Well there he was with a big smile on his face saying "I knew you were going to come back"...I took his photo and he told me what days he worked and to be sure to stop and talk.

 

I will Larry, you were a pleasure to talk with and I'm looking forward to some of your stories.

Nick I love good Bar-B-Q and try to have it every chance I get.  The best one around me is about 25 miles away and well worth the drive.

Great Localism post Nick! It's always nice to have a place like Thomas Bar-B-Q that you just know is the perfect comfort food place to go to. When I win that Harley from June's contest, I'll ride on over and we can down some cold ones and some good eats!
