What motivates a person to become a real estate agent?

I assume most people decide to make a career move and actively decide to become real estate agents.  Perhaps they think there's lots of money to be made or perhaps their friend is one or perhaps someone encourages them.

I had no intention of becoming a real estate agent because I never thought a shy person like me could sell anything.  I did decide that I needed to learn something about real estate for possible investment knowledge so I'd take a real estate course.  The course was fascinating with all kinds of new terms like mortgage, metes and bounds, sections, townships, ranges, ethics, etc.  Once I had finished the course, it seemed foolish not to at least take the exam for licensing.  I took the test and that was before calculators.  It took two weeks to get the information about whether you passed.

Well, I did pass!  It felt good to know that I now could have a license to sell real estate.  And before I knew it there was a broker knocking on my door who came for only one reason.....he wanted me to be affiliated with his firm and be a "referral agent" because he knew I was a full time school teacher and wasn't going to be able to work full time as a real estate agent.

Why not??  I signed up.  It was a time when Lightle Dobbins and Lightle was having training several nights a week.  It was then and still is unusal for a broker to offer training.  I became interested in the entire range of real estate!  I hurried to the real estate office as soon as I got out of my classroom.  So in my case the broker actually motivated me to become an agent and I'm glad he did.

Great post and great story. Everyone has a story why they chose real estate and I always like to hear the different motivating factors for choosing this career.
