Obviously, the first step in any business opportunity is to make a plan. Without a plan, your chances of succeeding with your blogging venture may be slim. In building your plan, you should consider these guidelines.

1.   Let your personality show - People like to work with people they have things in common with. Letting your personality shine in your writing will create commonality with your readers and differentiate you from the millions of other bloggers out there. I'd suggest weaving personal stories into your posts while you address a topic. Give your readers something to connect too.

2.   Update regularly - The frequency of update is key to catching the eye of search engine spiders that peruse the Internet looking for content. I would update your blog a minimum of once a week. However, more frequent updates will draw more attention to your blog because of the richness of content. Set aside time to blog regularly but be realistic with your time. If you can't commit to the 15-30 minutes for each post, you will just  should be all it takes it

3.   Syndicate your blog - By utilizing the RSS or ATOM Feeds that most blogging platforms support, you can maximize your exposure on the Internet. These XML-based technology created short summaries of each post on your blog. These summaries can then be picked up by other blogs, websites, blog syndication sites or used with newsreader software. You are basically saying "USE MY STUFF" to the Internet.

4.   Stay on course - Occasional lapses in your plan will happen, that's life but makes sure that you are consistent in updating your blog and providing the content that keep your readers coming back.

With that said, let's talk about your plan. Your blog is part of your business, treat it like a business. Lay out a mini-business plan for your blog and stick to it. Here are some questions that you may want to consider when building your plan.

1.   Who is your audience and what would they be interested in?

2.   What are my goals?(i.e., simple vs. full-function, lead generation, informing customers, networking with other professionals, etc,)

3.   How frequently do you plan to blog?

4.   Will you enlist help from other professionals in related industry?

5.   How will I will promote my blog?

Setting up your plan ahead of time will help to get you moving faster and eliminate the frustration of going in the wrong direction with your blog. Remember, running a blog is a long-term marketing vehicle. There is normally not a short-term ROI. However, as your audience grows, you are bound to experience the benefit's discussed in part 1.

Good post.  I'm still new to blogging and I'm open to learning a lot more.  Thanks for taking the time to write this.  #3 on the top about syndicating my blog was interesting and something I'm not too familiar with but I think I got the picture.  I'll keep these points in mind and try to use them in my business.  - Aloha

Great post.  I was reading a report published this month that a new blog is developed every two seconds.  This new form of social media is the next form of distance communication for many groups and organizations.

Having a plan is one of the most mportant things to blogging.  I write out my goals for my blog for the week each Sunday.  Having very specific traffic, lead or synidcation goals is very important.  It helps you plan your posts and measure your success.  Great post.

Our plan is to engage the assistance of professionals rather than get up to speed on the technical nuances of blogging.  We'll write the content - but won't be the techies!

Good point, Tony. Keep the writing YOU, and spend money instead of time for the other things. I'm sure there are qualified high school kids that can do some of it far better than we can.

Joe,

You make very good points and something I need to think about. Unlike the Mary, I do not have a plan for my blogs as far as what I will write each week. I ususally write as the mood strikes me.

Guess I need to rethink this.

Some good insight..... One that stands out is having a Plan. Something that I started this weekend... and to get ideas on people before the week started.

Thanks for the reminders...

A plan? I just sit down and try to write something!  Mary blogged something about this earlier too.  OK, I'll work on it.

Can someone explain what an RSS or ATOM feed is?  I'm just blogging away...  In lue of that is it something my 12 year old boy or 15 year old girl would know?  They already have to turn on the TV for me, they might as well feed the ATOM's for me too.

In a nutshell, RSS is XML Technology that creates a feed, in the form of short summaries of each post, that can be pick up be web syndication site, newreaders and/or other websites/or blogs. ATOM feeds serve the same purpose but work a bit differently. By making these feedsavailable (syndicating) , you are saying "USE MY STUFF". It sounds like syndicating blogs would be a good topic of discussion. Look for it here later in the week.

Staying true to your target readers is important.  For people who like to blab about multiple things, (who me?) there is the option of more blogs!

I have blogs at blogger (suggests Feedburner for RSS) for different topics.  Last week, I opened a couple more at the new blogger beta which has a variable feed option.

Occasionally, I have cross-over topics that I can post in more than one of them with a little tweaking.  Takes some pressure off of the brain.

Write, Write, Write!

Joe,

Great Blog Topic! I'm pretty new to blogging, but to do this and do this right, a plan is an absolute necessity...

I believe that it is important to have a plan, but I'm also recognizing the need to keep the plan flexible...

Sometimes life forces the plan to change and you simply can't put the blog on Auto-Pilot.... Have a plan, but roll with life....

Keep on Rollin!!

Hi Joe,  Question...  3.   Syndicate your blog - By utilizing the RSS or ATOM Feeds that most blogging platforms support, you can maximize your exposure on the Internet.

Please describe the nuts and bolts of how to use and/or integrate these feeds.  I'm clueless.

Thanks,

Kelly M

I'm fairly new -and have sort of just jumped in to the blogging scene. I guess you kind of need to plan what you want to say before you broadcast it to the world.  It makes sense in away to do a rough copy then tweak it and maybe get someone else to read it over first.  Put your best foot forward and hopefully you will have a winner!

Informational! But it is all so overwhelming.  In the crazy world of real estate, when do you have all of this time to "blog"?  And, I too, am curious about SYNDICATING?
