After a recent public hearing over whether to issue a Special Management Area Use Permit to a proposed new subdivision on Oahu Hawaii's North Shore, many in the community were left feeling that it was a bad idea. The proposed subdivision, to be located in Kawaiola, near Waimea Valley, would include 25 homes, on lots ranging from 7,000-13,00 sq ft.

Planners for the project point out that this density is much lower than that allowed in the area, zoned R-5 and permitting 5,000 sq ft lots, each with one single family home. They also state they are in compliance with all other laws and regulations and that plans are in place to address all of residents' concerns.

At issue, as is usually the case when any North Shore development is proposed, is the environmental impact of ocean pollution from septic systems and construction sediment runoff, whether any burial grounds would be affected, and the effect of potential new turning lanes on the traffic flow of the Kamehameha Highway.
