Carlsbad Things to Do - Visit the California Surf Museum in Oceanside

Outside the Surfing Museum in OceansideAs a non-surfing surfing enthusiast, I recently wrote about surfing in the Southern California area, focusing on Carlsbad, Encinitas and Cardiff. I mentioned the California Surf Museum in Oceanside but had not yet paid a visit. So I could not comment very much.

Well, today I stopped in on my way home from showing Oceanside homes- and I'm glad I did. While I do not yet surf, I absolutely am enthralled with the history of the sport here in Southern California and the lifestyles that have evolved.

Surfing has had a tremendous impact on communities, sports, attitudes and much, and to live in this area on has to appreciate the influence that surfing has had, and still has, from Oceanside to San Diego.

You owe it to yourself to stop by the California Surf Museum, on the 101 in the center of Oceanside at 223 N. Coast Highway. And make sure you also talk to Todd Quinn - he is incredibly knowledgeable about the sport, the history, the surfing greats, AND is passionate about the preservation of the history and educating folks about all aspects of surfing. It goes far beyond a sport or recreation, but is a lifestyle that has had far-reaching influences on many communities for decades.

If you have any interest in surf boards, the museum is an amazing collection of history - one board, or wood, on the ceiling is about 100 years old. But there is so much more - photos, books, movies, collectibles, posters, and just about anything related to surfing you can imagine. The museum also features exhibits from time to time, and currently has an exhibit of photography by Tom Keck, the famed photographer who has been chronicling surfing since the 1950s, with photos of some of the most famous surfers in history. Truly an incredible photographic journey back in time.

Another neat bit of news. It seems the museum may be moving to a new, much larger location on Pier View which will allow them to further expand the collection. This will make an already terrific museum even better. Admission is free, but donations are always helpful.

So take some time to stop by and enjoy a bit of surfing history.

Hi Jeff, How fun, I didn't know it even existed. I will put it on my to do list when I am up that way.

PS, I liked your Real Estate Tidbits widget. I clicked on to get the widget. Boy did I get a surprise. I copied the code and attempted to put on my side bar and I lost all functionality there. I have very little functionality in the site anywhere and of course the side bar and tags are not accessible. I could see the code when I did a viewsource but since I can't fix it and No one ever returns my e-mails from Active Rain, I just have to make do with poor functionality. I actually thought that maybe it would cause me to give up on the site. With all the code damaged you can probably guess what a pain it is to try and make comments, lol. Will I ever learn?

So, Jeff, is the name 'Gidget' anywhere in the museum?

William - looks like you put the widget in your links rather than your settings box.

That sounds like a great place, Jeff. I'm looking forward to being back in Hawaii in January (CRS Sellabration and CLHMS class) where there's a lot of surfing as well. I like the famous surfer status on Waikiki Beach.

William - just go in and delete the code you added, then start over. As Elaine said, it sound like you added it in the wrong section. But thanks for the compliemtns anyway!

Elaine - OMG. So funny you brought that up. Didn't see it but it made me think - bet it was there somewhere. What about Beach Blanket Bingo? I think that was one of the movies around that time - seems to me it was Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello (one of the original Mouseketeers).

Sharon - yeah, and Hawaii is probably even better known for great waves than California. There is huge controversy here in Cardiff about the new surfing statue. It's in all the papers.

Jeff, first of all, who is that man pictured in the suit???.  This is such a great example of localism at it's best.  I have my own blog for Lake Norman and will use some of your posts as inspiration.  I grew up with a surfer brother who started back when HOBIE was making only long board  with a balsa wood stripe in the middle. (1960's) and he could hardly carry the board!  He is still a surfer at age 58...it's not just a sport but a part of who he is.

Jeff: We loved Frankie - hated Annette because she had boobs and we didn't. Who played the original Gidget ... the little blonde girl? I think Sally Fields played a later version didn't she? Wasn't another name from that era "Moon-Doggie"?

Diane - Thanks for the comments. I don't know who that is (I should have looked and taken some more notes). I love being near the water and sharing information about the recreation and activities, including surfing, is enjoyable.

Elaine - LOL. I dare say that was the reaction of many of the women. And the guys all loved Gidget (Frances Lawrence), although I think Frankie was the idol of many guys because of his ability to attract just about evey woman around. :)  I think you're right about Moon Doggie, too.
