I'm back at work today, catching up, had an unexpected showing early this morning too. I took the past two days off. I had a fabulous two days. Wednesday my husband and I had friends over for lunch and an afternoon of Hand and Foot. If you've never played and like cards, it's super fun. I linked to the rules. Oh and Wednesday we won :) Yeah. Max and Mary have had a long winning streak. I cooked Minestrone soup, we had a salad, we had lasagna and big pan of roasted carrots, brussel sprouts, onions and mushrooms. Oh and Donald baked a carrot cake for desert too.
Then Thursday we slept in and headed for the fairgrounds in Perry. The Georgia National Fair is one of my favorite things to do. It's always fun. The weather was perfect. It was a little nippy upon arrival but warmed up to a beautiful 78 degrees with lots of sunshine. We checked out the livestock, cows, hogs, horses, but my favorite is always the rabbit exhibit. I love bunnies and there are always some you can pet.
And of course there are the "fair foods" , not really on my diet, but hey, the fair is once a year and so I indulged a little. First we had roasted corn on the cob. It was fantastic. Then we were off to look at the commercial exhibits. Over the 21 years of the fair I have found some really great products and it's where I bought my Kitchen Kraft waterless cookware 8 years ago and we like to go back from year to year and add to our cookware set. Although this years purchase is for a Christmas gift for my daughter.
By this time my Donald was wanting to "eat" again. So I had a corndog and he had a footlong chili dog for lunch. Then we had to decide on desert... and if you have NEVER had a deep fried snickers... you just really have to try it. There's really no good way to describe it with actual words. You just have to imagine Donald and I making yum and um and mmmmm noises as we shared one. It was breezy and you can see the powdered sugar flying off the snickers in this photo. Delicious. So much better than a funnel cake. But I did share it Roger, and I walked A LOT. So hopefully it won't totally kill the dieting efforts this week.
And we checked out the cooking contest for the day. (It was peanuts yesterday) and a couple of the recipes looked really good and I'll be trying them out. I'll share if they come out to my liking. They were offering some samples, but there was a long line and we were off to look at other exhibits. The photos and paintings are always my favorite. I keep threatening to enter some photos, but I haven't. I did pick up a brochure about the contest. Maybe next year.
I also picked up a birthday gift for my dad... but I can't tell you what it is until after I give it to him. But you won't have to wait long. His birthday is in five days. But I can tell you, I look for unique when it comes to my Daddy. And this is one of those things that you buy for someone and wish you'd gotten one for yourself too. Can't wait until next week when I can show it to you.
Here are just a few more of the fun things I enjoyed at my visit to the Georgia National Fair. And you can still go this weekend. It's in Perry, just off I-75- you can't miss it.
I always like to sit along the water and watch the kids ride. I used to ride all the rides with my children, but not so much anymore. These days I'm just happy to find a spot to sit down and rest a while. Most of the commercial exhibits and all the contests are located indoors in building with heat and air so those are really nice no matter what the weather at the fair is each year. The forecast for the weekend is warm days, cool evenings and plenty of sunshine.
These were some 4-H scarecrow contest entries....
