October is my favoite month of the year. And October wouldn't be complete without a voyage to pick out pumpkins for carving Halloween Jack-o-Lanterns. I have always gone to garden centers or roadside stands for my pumpkins and never experienced an actual pumpkin patch. All of that changed when I head out on Sunday to Yankey Farm's Pick Your Own Pumpkin Patch off of Vint Hill Road just north of the intersection with Sudley Manor Drive....mere yards away from the back entrance to Braemar in Bristow, VA.
Once you get to Yankey Farm's pumpkin patch, you snag a little red wagon and off you go Walking past the corn maze where children are picked up for a Cows-n-Corn train ride, pulled by a tractor , the pumpkin patch is staight ahead. I was excited at the prospect of walking through the patch where these pumpkins are grown and hand picking my own. I just wish that someone would have told me that wearing socks was a geat idea (I had an athletic slip on covered shoe) and having gloves would have been a good idea. Pumpkin stems are prickly. and there are lots of burrs on the ground.
None of that stopped me from scouring the pumpkin patch for three perfect pumpkins that would grace the outside of my home for Halloween, all aglow to greet my Braemar trick-or-treaters. I purchased three rather large pumpkins, picked right off the vine, for only $20. Seemed a great deal to me. And I'm sure the families brining the little ones for the corn maze and Cows-n-Corn train rides had even more bang for their buck.
I will definitely be back next year to pick my own pumpkins at Yankey Farms Pick Your Own Pumpkin Patch off of Vint Hill Road in Nokesville.
