We have a two and a half year old Beagle/Hound (mutts are the best dogs).  We got her as a puppy from a rescue service here in Virginia.  My daughter named her Jenny.

Her favorite perch is the front entry stairs, where she can look out the windows and see what's coming.

Her favorite activities include tearing anything in the house she can to shreds and chasing rabbits in the back yard.  And when I say shreds, I mean shreds!  It's always a mess.  But because of her penchant for chasing rabbits, I took her to the pet store and bought her a squeaky rabbit toy.

We call the toy Rabbit.

She loves Rabbit and takes him everywhere, squeaking.

I thought Rabbit would last about 5 minutes, but no.  She protects him and carries him all around.

She often carries him out back, laying him on the deck, to watch as she chases rabbits in the yard.

Sometimes she forgets and leaves Rabbit outside.

We built this house 13 years ago.  Our youngest was 1 at the time.  The next year I decided to get her a special play set.  It had all the bells and whistles.

She doesn't use it much any more, except to swing lightly with her friends as they talk and text.

Currently this play set is the favorite hang out of a hawk who inhabits our neighborhood.  He sits quietly on the roof, waiting for rabbits to pop by.  I have never seen him get one, but he is there every day and no doubt has had success.

I noticed something odd about the hut a couple of days ago.  Do you see it?  On the roof?

It's Rabbit!  How did Rabbit get up there?

I asked Jenny, "Where's Rabbit?"

She ran to the hut and looked up!  "Rabbit" is one of her vocabulary words now and she knew exactly where he was!

I have to think that the hawk saw the toy laying in the yard, swooped down and carried him to the roof of the hut.  Realizing it was inanimate, the hawk left the toy on the roof, probably in disgust!  He got faked out by the toy!  So much for the evening meal!

Cwazy wabbit!  Wow, cwazy hawk!

And no, I did NOT set this up!  My daughter brought the rabbit to my attention, while doing a hut inspection, no doubt!  I'm surprised the dog didn't...

Good one Kim!  Apparently not!  I didn't think Rabbit's stuffing would last 2 minutes, but it has!

S&D - Insulation Man!?  Just in time for the weather!  Yes, our dogs have lots of animal vocab words.

Wallace - Pico bites?  Yes, Jenny is a big player.  Most dogs, when you intimidate them with a stance or something will run away in play.  Jenny does not - she's a linebacker!  She attacks!  And jumps - she does not fool around!  As to treats - we have a particular treat routine which includes certain numbers.  One of the chicken treats gets torn into three pieces, and if any of those three are missing I get some big complaints...

Surprised the hawk didn't rip the toy to shreds out of frustration.

I don't know hawk think, Cindy, but it may have frightened him to see that it was not real.  Maybe they think about booby traps!

I happened on a hawk in my yard one day just finishing a meal. I was in my truck coming in the driveway and saw a mess of feathers to my left. As I crept closer I saw the hawk and he saw me. Just like that he was gone! So was what ever he was eating. There was nothing left but feathers.

I have no doubt a hawk lifted Rabbit onto the roof. They're great hunters.

I found the whole thing to be pretty funny Fernando!  I had to post a blog about it!

Jim - I think so too.  There is no other way that could have gotten up there.  A cat would not have done such a thing, recognizing in the yard that it was inantimate.  The hawk swooped and had it up there in 2 seconds, before realizing he was punked!

I turned the corner once on a country road and looked through a barbed-wire fence to see a bald eagle standing about 3' from the fence.  He was huge!  I had never seen one in the wild like that, and never one so close.  It was a cool experience.  He did not wait to pose for my picture!

Right now, Dale, it is beside Jenny on her little bed under my office desk.  She is resting up now, preparing for her afternoon nap.

Cute story Jay, you sure have a cute dog.  I have seen birds nest with cloth in it, so I can see the hawk picking up the rabbit.

I don't know how else it could have gotten up there Diane.  The hawk thought there was a meal coming!

Jay, I saw an eagle do that to a cat once----left a bunch of fir at the point of impact but the eagle and the cat flew off together.

They are merciless Charlie!  How else could that rabbit have gotten up onto the hut?

Wow Kathryn, Sitka and Jenny could be siblings!

Jay ~ What a delightful story.  We have a tiny little Yorkie Poo (my granddaughter's) and our next door neighbor frequently calls to say the hawks are out, be sure Katy doesn't go in the yard right now!

He is a big yellow tail hawk Damon.  But he gets to live too!

Tish - I would listen to that!  I bet a small Yorkie can be carried off by a hawk, and certainly an eagle.
