Labor Day was first celebrated in 1882 with a parade honoring labor and the intention to provide a day off for the working man.    Congress made it a Federal Holiday in 1884.  Always celebrated on the first Monday of September, Labor Day remains a day of rest and has become the symbolic end of summer.
