Local Farmers Markets

A farmer's market is one in which farmers, growers, or producers from a defined local area sell their own produce directly to the public. They are usually held out-of-doors, in public spaces, and all products sold have been grown, reared, caught, brewed, pickled, baked, smoked or processed by the farmers. In addition, farmers' markets often feature produce that is grown naturally or organically, meats that are raised humanely on pasture, handmade farmstead cheeses, eggs and poultry from free-range fowl, as well as heirloom produce and heritage breeds of meat and fowl. Farmers markets have continued to rise in popularity, mostly due to the growing consumer interest in obtaining fresh products directly from the farm.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) provides additional information about farmers markets.

You may also wish to view the AMS web page on locating local farmers markets.

Please note: AMS works to maintain a current listing of farmers markets throughout the United States. Market information is provided to AMS from various sources including state market representatives, market managers and consumers, and is updated on a regular basis. To add or change market information, please contact the AMS Marketing Services Branch.

National Farmers Market Week (.PDF document) took place August 1 through 7, 2010.

Grew up on a Maine farm and planted, picked, sold a slew of produce to local folks. Education in dealing with people at an early age too. The lady in the Lincoln tighter than a bark on tree, the rusted Rambler driver free with a big tip when she should hang on to the extra money given a little guy. For the next car inspection, repair job.
