WW II Aircraft Show Simply Incredible
I was honored today to see some WWII aircraft, actually not only did I get to see but also crawl around inside, and witness landing and take off. It was absolutely incredible. To be able to be up close and personal with such massive pieces of history was really a treat. The trio of aircraft included two bombers, a B-24 and a B-17 as well as a P-51 Mustang fighter. All three played major roles in the air war of WW II.
I was amazed at how privative the construction, cables out in the open, wooden benches for seats. This is not your commercial 737. How these guys completed 12 - 14 hour missions sitting on a board for a seat is beyond me. Or check out the gun turret under the B-17, you were pretty much stuck in that little cramped space for the duration. These planes are not pressurized so they were cold, cold, cold. It was interesting seeing the swastika's on the side of the planes. Makes you really think hard about the job that our service men and women faced during WW II.
For me it was personal trip, as my dad was a crew member on B-17's over Europe. He was stationed in London and told me stories about the bombing raids on London. This was really a special day for me, and I thought my AR colleagues might enjoy it as well. Next year I am springing the $425 for the half hour ride. Now that is gonna be awesome....
This is soooo cool! My hubby (history teacher) would love this big time! Thanks for the post...I will share it with him for sure!

Gerry that Wings of Freedom tour came by our area in September. In looking at some of the access doors for the bomber, I know that in my current state, I would not have been able to get through them.
Gerry - very cool and I think I too would pay the $425 - what a thrill. Wonderful slide show!
Kristin, it definitly is a history buffs moment, it was great
Ed, I remember your post, and when I realized it was the same deal, I headed right over
Paula & Sharon, next year I will have the footage from inside the plane while in the air
Gerry, so neat to see this. I think our military history is so interesting. Our air force base, before closure; would bring in a lot of planes from different eras and it was always fun to take that tour.
That is quite a show Gerry! Rich in world history and family history as well!
