As a general rule of thumb I watermark my photos because I have seen photos being lifted off website without being acknowledged and posed as someone else's work. (Someone on AR recently said that he is not a fan about it, but unfortunately I have to do whatever it takes to protect my work. But I am looking in different ways to watermark it so it's not in huge block letters. That is something for you to think about on how you want to do it).

It is also great PR for myself having my website on the photos. There are watermarking softwares out there that you can purchase but certainly you can DIY it in your photoshop. Here is a brief tutorial of photoshop:

Say you have a photograph here about hello kitty flowers, courtesy of Apple Daily of Taiwan. Open it up in your photoshop:

Select the Horizontal Type Tool that looks like the T on the menu bar. (pardon my childlike arrows here...)

Once you select the tool, place the cursor on the photo where you would want the types to show, then type in whatever you would like...

Now that you need to flatten your layers to make it ready to be saved in JPEG. Click on Layer in the menu bar on top, scroll all the way down and merge the layers

After that, viola! You are done!

Once you closed the layers and saved as a JPEG, it will be difficult to remove the watermarks. There are really skilled people who can do it but it will be a pain to reconstruct the photos. I have also seen people say that if they put the photos in a slide show and it can't be lifted, which is not true. I will write a follow up post later.

Hope this helps,

Cindy

Hi Cindy,

Great post - does this process work for other photo management programs?  You mention Photoshop - what if someone does not have that?  I suppose any program that allows you to put text on top and then save as a JPEG would work.  It's a good idea for anyone that suspects others may lift the photos to use without permission.

Thanks for the details instructions Cindy.  I've been able to do this using imaging software that came with my PC.  This is a time-consuming step for us, but I think it is time well-spent.

Cindy ~  Would you be able to save the watermarked picture as, for example "flowers.jpg.2" and still be able to keep your original picture (i.e. "flowers.jpg")?  Sometimes I print my pictures out, and I wouldn't want the watermark on it.

Thanks for the instructions!

Jennie I think most photo programs can do it.

Angel Yes it does! But it's just SO time consuming. I need to hire an admin monkey to do this so I can focus on other stuff.

Kathy Yes, just do "save as." Just be careful when you first edit it. I would recommend that you do save as first then you won't risk accidentally saving on the original. If you do accidentally saved on the original, don't close the picture yet. Go to "Window" and select "History" if your History window is not open yet. Once you have the history window open, click on the first one on the list. It will say something like open photo, etc. click on that and you will see the photo returns to its original state and all your edits are gone.

Maureen Thanks for the suggestions!

Hope this helps,

Cindy

Cindy, thanks very much for sharing this. I'm sure this will help a lot of folks realize that watermarking is quite doable for the average person.

It's certainly of more and more importance as digital content is a mainstay of Realtors work...and a vulnerable part of it.

I just wanted to add that if you are watermarking a lot of images in this way you can do one of two things to speed the process up (or both):

Create a layer that is otherwise transparent except for the text and simply duplicate this into each image (instead of creating the text each time). Or use the Bridge to run an action on a group of photos, putting the watermark in automatically.

Anyway, I'll stop hijacking your blog. Thanks again for bringing this up. :)

Cindy~

Thanks for this great tutorial. I bookmarked it and gave it a 5. I use Arc-Soft Photo Studio and it worked fine on my photos. I have already watermarked several pictures and find it is very easy once you get started.

Cindy- thank-you for the information.  Like Jenny I do not use photoshop but I will try it out on the program I am using  (Picnik).  I have bookmarked (and given you a 5) this post as I want to refer to it when I try this.  I also want to see if I can follow Bryce's instructions.  I am so glad that I subscribed to your blog as you are always coming up with such valuable information.

Maureen THANKS! Are you the big honcho over there now? haha I will write another one this week on how to lift photos off slide shows since I have heard people saying that they don't need to watermark if it's in a slide show. Actually it's still very easy to lift.

Betty I am glad it works!

Cheers,

Cindy

Cindy - I have found that if I just put a big X in magic marker over the entire photo and then put it in the scanner - voila - I have a photo that no one will steal.

It is quick and soooo simple - your method is really a lot of work , but I must admit, looks more professional.

I've got to go try this.  I don't know if it's possible in Paint or not, and if not, what other software I have on my computer that might work, but I'll look around. Thanks, Cindy.   And thanks Kathleen for the back-up strategy LOL!

Cindy.  I ran into a similar problem in one of my first jobs, and actually blogged it  "Doth She Protest Too Much".  Watermarking does take time, but if you have shots that so spectacularly present your work, it's worth the investment.

I cannot speak for multiple software programs, but in addition to Photoshop which is AWESOME, I've actually layered elements on top of photography using PowerPoint.  I'll post about this later on this week, but if you open PP, insert a picture, create a watermark photo or a text box, or WordArt, you can place the watermark element wherever you'd like on top of your photo. Select both, group, and re-save.  The concept, I believe, is pretty much the same, regardless of the application.

Great Post, and Cheers, from DC!

Jaynee is right, you can do that in Publisher. I would suggest that you enlarge the picture when working in publisher, to at least be the size of the paper, then add your words on top, group, and save as a jpg ---
