CHURCHES.  I'll admit that I worry about the present and future of the religious part of what caused the United States to be settled and to become a country.

In our country, freedom has never meant that one has the right to do something that another doesn't have.  But those challenges often arise, nevertheless.

That's when the democracy part comes into play.  The majority's wishes are supposed to be the deciding factor.  It's how we make the rules that all of us are supposed to follow.  It's how we decide who will be the managers of our country.

While there is no specific U.S. religious denomination -- Baptist or Lutheran, or Jewish let's say -- the United States founding and resulting constitution make it quite clear that our country's religion is Christian.

And in the Christian model, all are welcome to come here regardless of whether or not their religious beliefs are Christian, something else, or nothing at all.  And they can be assured that they can practice their beliefs without interference from the others, as long as those practices are and remain peaceable

But unless those members of one of those minority religious groups, whether by themselves or in congress with the others, become the majority, neither they nor our courts should have the expectation or the authoritative rule to stifle the will of the majority.

Interestingly, Jews are very respectful of this balance.  Although they are a minority in America, it is because of that very Christian foundation that provides them with the most civil country in the world to be what they are, and to be what they are without any significant challenge or interference from the others.  Their religious rights are rabidly protected by the majority.

One can only wonder why so many of the other minority factions don't see that benefit to their group, and thus, follow the fine example of the U.S. Jews.

THE CURE OF TAXES.  In the early 1960s I studied in a major university's graduate business program.  I worked in a Saint Louis bank, and I was interested in knowing how the supply of money would work as the U.S. moved from being isolationist to more global.  What I was taught just shy of 50 years ago has proved true day by day, year by year.  The government must stay out of the way of the work of business.  And it must stay out of the lives of its people unless it is asked to do so by the electorate.

There are always those who refuse to believe that the experiences of the past can be a superb way to predict the future.  Many of those who are in elected office now seem to be in that camp.  Apparently many citizens of the U.S. are as well.

Oddly adhering to the principal of "let the buyer beware" (caveat emptor) is more important to our well-being than expecting the government to look after every detail of our lives.  However, in the main it has almost completely disappeared.

RECOVERY.  If history still rules, and there is no reason to think that it doesn't, as soon as the national November elections are complete, and regardless of the outcome, a noticable economic recovery will begin.  Business and people do not like uncertantity.  What it boils down to is this:  Just tell us what the good news is and what the bad news is, we'll figure out how to adjust.  Uncertainty has been more the cause of our economic problems than any of the other issues.

Thanks for stopping by and spending a few minutes with me here in the park.  It's always a good place to share the world with nature and to reflect on the past and think about the future.

Interesting read Bill. I agree on a lot of your points and hope the future remembers the past.

Bill - great thoughts, I especially agree with " The government must stay out of the way of the work of business.  And it must stay out of the lives of its people unless it it asked to do so by the majority.".  Let's all hope and pray a recovery will occur soon!
