 Do We Know What we are Really Selling -  I May Have Forgotten

Something dawned on me today, something that I have to admit that I wasn't all that impressed with myself. I have a closing this week, and to be honest in this market I am happy to have the income flow. While I have never been a "gotta get that commission" type of agent, I also admit that I understand that I am doing this to make money. I believe there is a fine line that we Realtors walk between making a living and helping people realize life dreams. Whether it is the retiring couple who we help get their big home sold so that they can get that condo with no maintenance responsibilities to the young couple we help get that first home where they are going to start their lives together, and build a new family.

So while I am sitting getting things together for the coming closing, figuring what bills are going to get paid with my commission, it dawned on me. The young couple purchasing this home are going to be creating memories for them, their parents, their families. The gentleman selling the home is moving into another chapter in his life. So what am I really a party too? I have reminded myself that I am in the business assisting  people through important milestones in their lives. It gives alot more meaning to me to remember that a closing is a way a beginning for the parties involved. I think I will refer to "closings" as "beginnings" from now on.

Sometimes it takes so little to make a large impact on how we go about our lives, today was one of those days for me. I am reminded of what a cool career I have chosen, and how I can make a positive impact the lives of my clients. It's been a good day....yeah a good day.

You've hit the nail on the head.  I have been focusing on being of service on a daily basis.  This means it's about my clients.  And sometimes this means "no sale."  But mostly it's about helping my clients solve their real estate needs.  I often don't even know how much I'll be making and often I have commission checks in my wallet that I have not taken to the bank because I'm really busy helping my clients realize their dreams.  If I start thing just about myself, I'm sure there would be no or few commission checks to deposit.

Gerry, I am SO GLAD that yours was the first blog I read today.  It was as close to a "morning devotional" reading one can get!  I realize that every time I meet a new buyer or seller, I'm going to be an important person in their lives during their time of transition, and they experience a lot of emotions during a move.  It is so important that we not only be a knowledgeable professional, but a person who cares and who listens.  So many,  many times I'm the person they end up crying with or talking about "other things" with.  I keep it all in balance, but it does give me reasons every day to pray for them, to send them a nice card sometimes, and to really enjoy my work!   There are many happy changes with clients, and some sad changes.   My slogan on my business card says, "Helping people--with life's moves & changes!"  I think that this real estate business really is one of the most "people" businesses out there.  As you said, we do enter their lives during their important milestones.  I really like your word, milestone, and am wondering if my slogan should change to "Helping people--with life's milestones".  I'm thinking about it. You inspired me.  Thanks!

If we make it about them, the business will come.  No sales pitches, no catchy slogans, no promises that I cannot keep.  If I am totally honest and be myself, the business will come along with referrals.  What better way to expand your business.

Throughout my life I have helped people not only through my volunteer work, but just helping others when help is needed.  It really is a great feeling to know that you have helped someone.  This is why I enjoy my work.  Yes, I have bills to pay and need to earn a lving, but the commission is not my primary reason.  Like you, it's because I enjoy helping others.  Isn't this what the Bible tells us we should do?
