It has been said many a time that the choices we make today will determine our tomorrow.  That is a very true statement and applies to what we do here in th Active Rain community as well.

Why did I decide to blog on a topic well known already?  It is because of what I was reading yesterday.  In my devotional yesterday, this was the topic.  Yes, I try to start my day with a devotional, reading a small section of the Bible and then spending some time in prayer.  That is who I am, and I am not trying to push religion here, but I need to inform you how i recevied this information.  And it is very interesting stuff!

Leaving the Bible verses out of the blog here, I wanted to share what I learned from my devotion that was really interesting to say the least.  The devotional I got this from, just so the source is named, is Our Daily Bread, which is integrated into my Bible software, which makes it easy for me to "get into".  I know, you want the information, so here it is...

What is interesting in this is that it highlights what happens when we are faced with choices and and it shows what happens when we do the right thing, and what happens when we do the wrong thing.  Many of you know, most of you should know, the name John Wilkes Booth.  In 1865, he assassinated Abraham Lincoln, then President of the United States.  The interesting part is that most of you were like me and didn't know about his brother, Edwin Booth.

Edwin was actually a well-known actor at the time.  What you may not know is that shortly before his brother killed the President, Edwin was waiting at a Jersey City train station when he saw someone slip and fall from the platform.  Edwin quickly grabbed the man's collar and pulled him to safety, preventing serious injury and possibly death.  What is extremely ironic is that the person Edwin saved was none other than Abraham Lincoln's son Robert, who was a soldier in the Civil War.

What a true tale of two brothers who faced the same choice.  They had the choice of saving a life or taking it.  How ironic that the same man who saved Lincoln's son had a brother that would soon kill the President.

Amazing story, and what a way to highlight the effects of the choices we make, and the irony that fills our lives and those around us.

Wow...I never knew that? Is that really true? If so it is a great example of power of choice and the irony of life.

Here in NH we had a very sad situation happen as young police officer Michael Briggs, was recently killed in the line of duty. He left behind a wife and two young sons.

They caught his (alleged) killer and just recently extradited him back to NH to stand trail.

By all accounts this young police officer was an extraordinary kind and compassionate human being.

A few years ago while he was on duty he was the first officer to arrive at a shooting scene.  He had training in first aid and was able to administer the necessary first aid to the shooting victim which helped to save his life.

That was in 2003 ... fast forward to 2006 and that very same shooting victim who the young police officer so heroically helped to save now stands accused of capital murder charges for killing him. Imagine saving the life of someone who years later would take yours?? Talk about ironic and choices!

Monika,

I never knew it either until yesterday.  I thought the info was so interesting I needed to write the post.

Your story is truly a sad one and definitely ranks high on the irony scale.  The question I would wonder is, if we were in the police officer's shoes, knowing what you said and going back to the 2003 time frame, would we save the killer's life?

I would like to say yes to that answer, even if it means my death later, but I am not sure I would actually do it.

Somehow ...I think he would have said yes. I didn't know him at all but his story touched me. I hope I would say yes if faced with that question but who knows. As a former EMT there were plenty of horrible accident scenes and tragic events that I saw and I know I just did what I had to do...sort of like on auto pilot, you react and then stop and think about it about for weeks...months...years afterwards.

Great post...sure got me thinking.

As a pilot, I recount some of the times I "cheated death".

One example is a time when we did a high-speed abort, making the decision to keep the plane on the ground within 1-2 seconds of rotation (V1 is the technically speed which we use to normally decide it is safer to fly than to abort).  The reason for the abort is that one of the control surfaces indicated out of the normal range, creating the potential for an unrecoverable problem if the plane we proceeded to takeoff.

This was not a regular event, but something that seemed normal as we trained for these situations in the simulator every 9 months.  What we pilots tend to do is start analyzing how we could have done it better, not what would have happened.

The interesting thing is a few months later a friend of mine emailed me a link to a video which showed an airplane that took off, nosed up, then stalled, veered right and crashed.  It almost instantly reminded me of what would have likely happened if we had not aborted the flight I mentioned, based on the indication we had.

I still remember most of the events like this one throughout my flying career.  Helps me to remember the power of making the right choices and the unforgiveness of making the wrong ones.

Robert.... wow.... thanks for sharing. I can actually move on today and say that I learned something new. Maybe one day I will be like Cliff Claven from Cheers.... just a book of knowledge. Well...Cliff's wasn't always true and or exciting.... lol   This was.

Monika.... that is a great story also..... life can be amazing sometimes, even when it adversity strikes. great story and my heart and thoughts go out to any family that ever have to go through this.

Jeff,

Cliff was definitely my favorite character from Cheers, although I liked most all of them.

Robert

I love your phrase " the power of making the right choices and the unforgiveness of making the wrong ones." A few words yet so powerful!

Monika...Thanks for highlighting that phrase.  It is a very powerful one.
