Would you stand up?

Last night I had to sing for the Confirmation mass as I do every year with my choir at St. Luke's Church in Stroudsburg, PA. I love participating in this ceremony as I get to watch and pray for this group of young adults who proclaim their commitment to their faith. It is always a grand affair, Bishop and priest from all over the area. Knights of Columbus with their swords and feather plumed hats, Full brass band and us singing like a choir of angels in the background.

The Bishop addresses the students and asks these questions...

How will you be different after you are confirmed tonight? What will change in your life?

After sharing with them many thoughts, he concludes with this true story...

One Sunday, in a church in Colombia, where guerrilla terrorist were ramped and regularly attacking and killing Christians, a congregation met to celebrate Holy mass. In the middle of the ceremony, the church doors fling open and a man enters with a machine gun under his arm. He marches up to the altar, grabs the priest and escorts him outside to be executed. After hearing the gunshots, the terrified congregation waited in silence and shock.

The doors open again and the man with the gun goes to the front of the church and shouts..."If any of you believe as that man, come forward now!" No one dared move a muscle. Then a man stood up and approached..."I believe"...He too was escorted outside to be executed. More shots fired and the terrorist returns. He asked the question again...One man stands up and then a woman. They exit as well to the sound of machine gun rounds.

The man enters one more time...and fearing what would happen...no one else stood up.

So the man says..."Get out of here all of you!"

They exit the Church to find the Priest, two men and the woman standing outside, unharmed. He points and says to the four..." Go back in where you belong." To the congregation standing outside he says...

"Don't ever go ever go back in that Church unless you have faith to stand up for what you believe in!"

This is my favorite meditation piece we sang after communion last night...like Heaven meeting Earth. ( This is not our choir but I found the closest version I could on YouTube...Enjoy!)

"O Sacrum Convivium"

Blessings...

Val, that was very powerful! I hope the kids get it as well as the adults should!

btw, my cousin was just ordained as a deacon, he lives in Penn. He recently came to LI for a family function and was able to assist in mass where I saw him.

Loved the post Valerie...It's easy to have Faith when times are good but it's how we act/react when faced with a crisis that really matters.

Very strong story, I was confirmed in the third grade, that's how they did it back in the day, much too young, I had no clue what it all meant.

Ellen~ I think a lot of the kids will get it and it is always nice to know that many family members who do not find themselves in church often will hopefully be touched in some way as well!

Michael~ Feel free to pass it on!

Anita~ So true. We are being tested all the time, not always in such an extreme way but in the "little" things as well.

Liz~3rd grade is way too young. I was confirmed in college after returning to my faith from a "brief hiatus". It meant so much more to me than it would have if I had made it when I wasn't really living out my faith.

Val- very strong story and we just have to ask ourselves, what would we do.  We'd all like to think we'd do the right thing but who can say.

Oh, how easy to sit here in my nice cozy house, my child sleeping in the next room and say "Of course I would stand up!"

I have stood up to bullies, I even jumped into the fray when I saw a man beating up a woman in a parking lot (and not ONE of the guys in our group did a thing!), and I'm (in)famous for speaking my mind.  But in a situation like that?  I think I have it, I certainly try to have it.  But in that situation?  Oh, God, please let my Faith be strong enough!

Kathy~ Most of us will never be called to stand in such an intense way, yet we are called to stand every day, everywhere we go, in all the choices we are faced with.

Michael! I thought so too...that is why I felt compelled to share.

Cinnamon~ Here's to standing strong!... and if you pray that prayer, you will have the strength of all the Heavens on your side!!!
