Life is Full of Blessings - Let's Count Them! - Pay it Forward

Blessings

There's a senior residential community that abuts the congregation I belong to.  The most senior member of this congregtion ( a women close to 90) was in mourning for the loss of her brother, her last remaining sibling.  This morning I paid her a condolence call.  Though I frequently make condolence calls, this one was different.

Not too many 90 year olds sit "shiva" (the 7 day period of mourning observed by Jewish mourners)  in solitude.  There are usually other family members "sitting shiva" with you and there is comfort derived from the sharing of both your memories and your pain.  But, Mrs. Berg was the last surviving sibling in her family, and the only surviving child of the deceased lived in South America,  so she was alone.

Knowing this, I made the effort to visit with her and brought her some homemade soup with crackers for lunch.  I went with the intention of lightening her spirits and left with her lightening mine.  She spent our time together telling me something about her youth, her family and her travels.

She was born in Romania and escaped with her family just a few days before Romania entered World War II.  They spent 3 years in Italy until they could get the proper papers and transport out of Europe.  They all wound up in Argentina where she lived fo 17 years.  She married there and subsequently moved to Rockland County NY to join her husband's family.

This woman never had an easy life, but you wouldn't know it from talking with her.  She's always upbeat and everything is always, Thank God, fine.  I went to see her so that I might help ease her lonliness - and I think I did; but, in the process she lifted my spirits.

So much of what we take for granted, are things we should be thankful for each and every day.  This visit was a reminder that life is full of blessings.  Let's not forget to count them.

Yes we are blessed and often times complain about things too much.  When I look around there is always someone worse off than me for sure. Nice post today and shows us that there are some very wonderful, caring people out there, like yourself. It's good to know that.  Take care and have a wonderful day.

Leah ~  How very uplifting -- what a kind and thoughtful expression of respect and caring.  Amazing isn't it, how it always comes back to us 10-fold.

Lora, your post echoed mine about caring of the elderly.  Many people don't realize how lucky they are and tend to forget about those who need our help, or they help us in return in a different way.  Good for you.

Sounds like you blessed each other.  You made a new friend and so did she.

Leah, what a great post. This was my experience over and over again. I loved this aspect of being a "pastor." Hearing a person's story and experiences allowed me to build understanding and empathy. It is amazing how often I truly felt blessed, just like you, when I left these "holy moments."

Be well.

Leah~ What a wonderful story! I really do love to listen to older folks tell stories of the past and the way things were. What a wonderful treat for you to hear and for her to have someone to tell it to!

Patricia - Thanks for grouping me with all those other "wonderful" people, now I've got to live up to it.

Tish - Thanks and thanks especially for the personal delivery of your comments.  It comes back 10fold and then some!

Rita - There so much we can learn from the older folks, if we only open ourselves up and are receptive.

Donna - I certainly got a lot out of it.  Hope she did too.

Cal - Isn't that the truth, we get more than we give.

Melissa - Thanks.  It always amazes me, but these old folks are living history books and not just stories of their past.

Lora, I love to listed to stories.  My 98-year old next door neighbor was a beauty queen and model.  Her scrap book is fascinating.
