Yes, it's true. I can't deny it. I love crabs. And not just any ole' crabs, mind you. But Dungeness Crabs. The delicious 'mouth-watering' variety that is plentiful here in the scenic Pacific Northwest.

When the crabbing season rolls around here on the Puget Sound WA, you can typically find me out cruising the deep, clear waters of Hood Canal in my trusty C-Dory, in search of the illusive 'Dungie.'

As real estate professionals and blogging enthusiasts, we hear so much about 'branding' and how to effectively distinguish yourself from the masses. In his book, "Realty Blogging," fellow ActiveRain member and Project Blogger Coach, Paul Cheney, talks about the importance of 'Branding' in your blog.

I'm wondering if using a crab may not necessarily be the most effective kind of 'branding.' Do I really want to be known as the "Crabby" real estate guy? Some crusty, hard-shelled bottom feeder? I mean, seriously, it's nothing glamorous like "The Deadliest Catch." About the most dangerous thing that's happened to me is when I forgot to put the boat plugs in. I have the scar to prove it too!

I guess you can probably get away with such seemingly unprofessional 'branding' on various social networking platforms like MySpace or Facebook. I've had a MySpace account for quite a while, but it's not something I use for attracting business per se.

I know it may seem silly or unprofessional to some. But crabbin' is one of my passions. There is something very primal and relaxing to me about being out on the ocean. All the stresses of my day quickly fall away the minute my boat's in the water. The view of the massive Olympic Mountain Range rising up dramatically from the shore reminds me that there's a much greater design and purpose behind this life that we live.

So yeah, I love crabs! It's just one of the many reasons why I love living here on the Kitsap Peninsula in beautiful Washington State.  But you don't have to worry. I doubt I'd ever go so far as to have a picture of a crab on my business cards. But I may just include a really great recipe for crab cakes in my next newsletter!

Mmmmmmm....  Seafood.

I prefer the Atlantic Lobster - but I guess it is all a matter of where you live!

Dont think I'd put a crustacean on my business card though.

Honestly...didn't like the title (sticking up for your wife whom you love so much)...:)       But it did catch my eye to come see what's going on...the crabs okay... do you eat the inside of the crab?  YUK.

I love Alaskan King Crab LEGS. Costco has huge ones!

"But crabbin' is one of my passions."  There are so many places to go with this quote, especially when talking with real estate professionals.  I would love to see a post on your favorite crabbin' spots with that as the title - unless they are secret.  The double entendre is great.  Sherry

Thanks Rich - had a couple of good belly laughs reading this one.  I love good crab cakes - YUM-YUM!  The recipe I use is from Bobby Flay with an incredible spicy mango chutney style salsa, and sits on a delicious sauce made by reducing carrot juice (among other things)  Geez - I'm getting hungry :-)

OMG - that picture of you kissing the crab is almost as good as Rick's kissing the lobster - you guys need to meet someday and leave your wives for your respective crabs and lobsters - Keep on branding, that crab is beautiful!

I'll take my lobsters over your crabs any day but I am sure we both would have a great time chowing down on our preferred catch.

I love shellfish in general, but I usually avoid them out of concern for my shellfish allergic husband. I refuse to a chance on his life for a few moments of gastronomic pleasure.

Rich,

I say if you can get personal branding out there that people recognize and generally like, I say go for it!  If crab is your thing, then let people know it. One of the most successful real estate agents in my community has a logo of him fly-fishing with the text "Your Skagit County Expert".  When I first saw it, I thought he was a fishing guide, but whatever works and it works for him VERY successfully... I'm sure its a great ice-breaker...  "Sparky" made you a distinctive logo... Use it for all its worth!

I say use it and put a recipe on the back of your business card, or a crab dinner for every listing client, something...

I've been working on some personal branding of my own... (My apologies for marketing my stuff on your blog, but it seems relevant.)  Here's the logo design I've come-up with... My dog "Jester" goes just about everywhere with me and all of my customers meet him... So, he's on the logo too...  What do you think??

Keep crabbin' my friend.  Even if you don't advertise it they will know about it and start joking with each other.  I'm known as a coffee nut.  (Only because I don't live near the coast!!!  I LOVE lobster and crab!)  My friends and clients joke about it all the time.  "if she's not at the office, have you checked Starbucks?"  For you...well he probably have crabs.... :)

Do not want to miss the crab recipies...Yum!  Nothing better than picking crabs, and drinking beer on the water.

09/03/2007 03:28 PM by Dawn DeGroff (Fredericksburg Realty, Inc)

Way to go Rich.  Get them crabs.  My brother spent six seasons on the Bering Sea Crabbers...I spent the season in a Bristol Bay Gillnetter.  Both are a lot of fun, but the gillnetter is safer.

My sister calls crabs, lobsters etc "sea bugs" and refuses to eat em.  Leaves more for the rest of us.

09/04/2007 02:48 AM by Marty Van Diest, Your Alaskan Realtor (RE/MAX of Wasilla)

Hey Rich... are you going to be at Symposium this year??

09/05/2007 04:09 PM by Boise Idaho Real Estate - Nick Vanassche (Century 21 1st Place Realty)

Whoo hoo!!  I love crab!  As a matter of fact, most people think I am nuts when I say that I would take a crab over lobster any day.  Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy lobster, but even though eating crab is more work, it is worth every minute...mmmmmmm...

09/05/2007 07:43 PM by Classic Property Management of the Antelope Valley - Jonathan Mitchell (Classic Property Management)

Ahhh...such a beautiful place to live and crab!  I had a friend with a home on Orcas Island and we caught crabs on the beach!  C-Dory's are such great and cute boats, my brother has been thinking about getting one.  While we suffer a drought and heat wave I will think about you enjoying such natural tranquility!

Rich...

Well. You know me. Branding is very important in this business.

I feel so strongly about that, that I have been known to nickname folks around AR just to brand them.

So...That being the case can I call you "Crabby Rich" ? :)

P.S. Could you please tell "Code Monkey" to knock it off? It's taking forever to submit comments :)

TLW...ROAR!

09/06/2007 03:09 PM by "The Lovely Wife"...Broker Bryant's Wife... (Co-Owner Tutas Towne Realty, Inc.)

TLW - you can call whatever you like, just not 'late for dinner!'

(I think the Code Monkey is busily correcting issues with the new Ad program)

09/06/2007 03:34 PM by Rich Jacobson ~ ActiveRain Community Builder (ActiveRain Corporation)

Okay...

You passed the test. I deleted this part of my comment...

"I know I can call you anything except late for dinner"...

Blog Boy and I are laughing because I deleted it and you said it :)

TLW...ROAR!

Rich,

Think you are safe. BB is branding himself with a garbled voice hussy that would still be alone after closing time... every closing time. You see, compared to some of the branding we endure, a crab can be a welcomed, beautiful thing.

Hi Crabby!

Love your brand and can't wait to try that recipe!  Thanks for sharing.
