Sarasota Reports Increase in Sea Turtle Nesting
Scientists have reported 721 sea turtle nests on the beaches of Sarasota, which represents the highest number in almost a decade. Loggerhead turtles represent the greatest percentage, with green sea turtles close behind.
Experts are speculating as to the upturn, in a year that record cold and an oil spill were expected to stunt the numbers. With just the opposite occurring. they are keeping a close eye on the populations.
Most locals are well versed in sea turtle conservation, and know to steer clear of the nests and keep lights off at night so as not to confuse hatchlings who follow moonlight.
